I think I have about $6K left...

None, neither of us went to college. We went to vocational school at Jab Corps so it was free.

I have about 17k left from my BS at a private school. I am in grad school but have not had to take out any more money for that. It is locked in at 2.7% and my payments are only about $150/month so it really isn't that bad.

None for us.

I went to a state school and was supported by my parents.

Dh had a little scholarship money, a little support from his dad, paid as he went by giving music lessons and playing gigs, and paid off the rest in a few years after he was done.

300K between DH and me!:

DH has loans from undergrad and we both went to chiropractic school, after associateships for 3 years (that pay next to nothing) we are starting our own practice which means...you guessed it...more loans!

I don't even like to think about the numbers, they make me hyperventilate. Good thing I love what I do, because I'll pay for it forever!

I'm gonna go puke now....
That's okay, we'll be there soon enough. We have $160K between the two of us and DH is planning on going back to school. He'll qualify for loan forgiveness when he's done under the new College Opportunity bill and the National Health Sciences program, but until then... yeah, we'll break $300K.

I am still in school.... however, I already owe $20,000. This is just for my BSN , and I still have 5 semesters to go. I do have grants/scholarships lined up for the Spring and plan to do the same for the rest of the semesters(hopefully!)

I have between 2-3k of about 5k in debt. I had some scholarships, paid some as I went, and went to a cheaper state school.

We've paid off dh's loan, after 10 years of payments. His was about 16k (he had some grants, and went to a state school).

We both have Bachelor's degrees. Dh would like to return for his Master's, but it will be subsidized by his job (teacher).

Worth every penny, imo!

Yup. We both did. But I also had kids and I needed the student loans to pay for daycare and living expenses that always popped up. As well as expenses incurred from dh's research he had to travel across the country for.

$130,000 for me
$115,000 for Dh

$245,000 Total

The min due each month is more than our mortgage.

Mine was about $7000.00 all together after 4 years. I lucked out and was on almost a full scholarship. Most of my debt was for some books and travel.

Dh and I are at $25,000. 10 years ago, he went to a provate automotive school (why oh why didn't we do community college?) and that was all loans. I went to cc for my first two years, and that was fully covered through grants. Now, I am going to 4 year. I applied late, and I took out $10,000 All of my tuition was coverd, I took out more for living. DH is in cc, and has grants. Hopefully next year, I will get scholarships and more grant money and not have to take out so much loan. I am doing Students in Service, which pays off the interest while I am enrolled, and then will forgive $2,400 of my loan.
And then, there will be grad school!!

DH just finished his PhD and his loans from undergraduate forward are over $100K. He always had a research or teaching assistantship as a grad student but with little ones and me only working part time and us not using our money wisely, we always ended up with loans. I had a $25k loan from my grad school but we are down below $5K now paying that off. Oh it makes me sick. His loans are currently deferred but that won't last forever.

I had about $30,000, but it's all paid off now. I finished paying it off in about nine years. I worked all through, and summers, and went to a state school, and got lots of non-loan aid, but I still wound up owing that much. I paid off a bunch of it with two years in AmeriCorps, and then paid off the rest slowly.

DH's parents supported him through school, so he didn't owe anything.

I've got a little under $80K for my BA and MA. If I had been a more financially savvy person, I would have realized it wasn't necessary to go that far into all that debt for school. But hindsight is 20/20....

DP has $2K left, I have $15K.
I worked hard to pay down my school by volunteering with AmeriCorps*NCCC $4725.00 a tour. I was able to pay off the rest of what I owed and put some aside for grad school

If I ever get there...

I have 50K, hubby has around 3K

I went to school off and on for about 8 years...still haven't graduated.

I worked, but min wage and I had no help from family. So mostly the loans were to live off of.

Makes me ill. I'm a sahm now, so DH gets to pay off my debt. Keeps us from getting a house.

Roughly 9k for me, about 4k for DH. I worked through college and still had to take out loans. I quit college because I was getting too many loans and getting overwhelmed working and studying at the same time. So far, I do NOT regret this decision. I went because it was expected of me (by my parents and mom's parents) not because I really chose to. I did gain a lot of life experience, and I did enjoy the chemistry and algebra classes, but I didn't learn very much for all the $$. I'm with my dad's mom on this one, she supports me even though my immediate family is kindof disappointed.

about 45k, for under grad and grad, but it's the only debt we have since the house is paid for.

HMB et al over $100k:

hugs to you and everyone well over $100k.

honestly, reading many your numbers made me feel so much better because 1. i don't feel as crazy (seriously, i had this delusion that i was rare to have this kind of debt because most of my friends either A. had their parents pay for school or B worked through school; as well as A. either didn't go to grad school or B. went to grad school and it was completely paid by the school, stipend, etc), and 2. i also feel the same way when i look at my numbers--i literally start an anxiety/shame cycle!

my husband is paid off, and i make monthly payments, but i owe $109,000 in school debt. i went to law school, graduated, but now i teach yoga.

we hope that my business will expand greatly in the next two years and that that expansion will allow us to pay off the whole debt in the next two years. Assuming things go the way that i hope they will. even if it only does half what we expect (which is what i make now), we've talked about putting all of that income toward the school loans, and paying it off in four years (right now, most of the income goes back into the business, to the minimum loan payment, and into our savings).

i so want this monkey off my back!
