Are you avoiding certain foods because...

I'm just wondering if any of you are avoiding certain foods for certain reasons or because they can cause allergies. I still eat a lot of dairy because I don't eat much meat, and wheat, but I do my best to avoid:

peanuts (no biggie for me I don't like them anyway)
strawberries

and

excessive soy (because of the estrogen)
excessive flax (idem)

how about you?

Wo! I heard about flax, but soy? Soy pasta is the ONLY kind of pasta I can eat. More info please.

I haven't been avoiding things for the baby exactly. But I have an extremely limited diet for other reasons. Makes it hard when you're always ravenous!

Since it's so early I'm trying to get in the habit of watching what I eat because by next month this baby is going to start draining my nutrient supply. I'm trying to avoid caffenine, sugar (natural sugar is ok), fried foods, processed foods, certains herbs and teas (heard these aren't good early on). Are there certain foods you heard women should avoid? this is my first pregnancy so I don't know what to expect.

I don't avoid much aside from the obvious (no hard drinking). Everything else in moderation. Overall my diet is pretty healthy. However, I have already switched from the occasional diet soft drink to regular.

I can't stand reading "OMG, I accidentally ate a *insert item here*! Will my baby be ok?" Humans are a hardy species.

Sugar and carbs (I had gestational diabetes during my last pregnancy)

Diet foods (artificial/chemical/carcenogenic ingredients)

Alcohol (in the first trimester -- I'm ok with the occasional glass of red wine later on)

Large fish (mercury)

Hmm, that's all I can think of for now. I mainly try to eat a healthy, balanced diet and don't get too excited about any one food, except maybe the artificial sweeteners and other chemicals that resemble pesticides!

Another vote for moderation. Everything I read about allergies/maternal diet was 50/50-there was no conclusive evidence either way. So I avoid the biggies (which I usually do anyway), such as artificial sweeteners, processed food, etc. We eat a mostly organic/totally vegetarian diet anyway. I've cut way down on caffeine (usually impossible) and only have a 1/2 cup in the morning. I'd love for it to be none, but it is impossible with my job (high school teacher) and 2 year old I am feeling a lot more relaxed about pregnancy this time around.

AKA PI-there's a massive list of things you're "supposed to avoid" (soft ice cream, soft, unripened cheeses, both due to listeria risk (very low, IMO); fish no more than 2x a week, due to mercury; sushi (of the fish variety); caffeine ( no more than 2 cups/day); I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of them...I'm sure there's a list floating around somewhere. Watch out for the pregnancy police!

Hey Mamas,

My son has many allergies/intolerances so when I was pg with my dd I avoided peanuts, had dairy/eggs very little in the 3rd trimester and also took a daily acidophilous supplement. The latter has been tested in Europe and they did show a lower allergy rate in the subsequent children. But I think it was only one test. Anyway, dd has no known allergies/intolerances so I will do the same with this pregnancy.

I'm avoiding tuna/swordfish/shark (the big mercury suspects), raw sushi, and raw milk cheese throughout my pregnancy.

I'm avoiding caffeine and alcohol entirely in the first trimester. Later on I'll go back to 1-2 cups of black tea a day. I feel comfortable with an occasional (like, less than once a month) half-glass of wine later in pregnancy, especially if it's medicinal - for example, to help calm me down when I am incredibly stressed out.

My midwives don't worry too much about Listeria, so I don't either. I'm continuing to eat deli meat as long as it's fresh and from a clean source. I don't eat things like packaged bologna.

I've been wondering about this:

Which is better (or worse)?

Homemade Sweet Tea (Lipton tea, filtered water, sugar) or
Crystal Lite with Splenda?

I'm trying to get more water but I just can't drink it alone. I love the crystal lite rasberry green tea and can drink 32 oz of that pretty easy. I just don't know much about Splenda. I love sweet tea but don't want too much caffine.

I don't have facts to share, but from what I've heard, artificial sweeteners are way more dangerous than a little caffeine. Maybe you could find a flavored caffeine-free tea you like and add sugar?
I don't drink green tea. But you may want to hunt down info on whether it's any different for baby than the regular brown tea.

This is the way I feel. In fact, I haven't cut out caffeine -- I still have 2 cups of organic coffee in the a.m. But it does make me nervous to consume artificial sweeteners. Some of them are know carcinogens and others resemble pesticides. Anyway, I'm sure we all have our comfort zones but that is mine!

Um, what's "excessive" flax? I never heard of any problem with flax, and I recently started taking a flax oil based Omega complex vitamin--I don't eat fish, so can't do the fish oil kind. I recently heard there's an algae based one--I wonder if should switch to that...?

While pg, I've cut out alcohol, most of my caffeine (I'm down to the equivalent of 1-2 cups of coffee per day, usually closer to 1), most artificial sweeteners (almost none), and unpasteurized dairy and runny eggs. I'm actually vegan except for the free range eggs and raw goat milk I get occasionally from friends who keep goats and chix as pets. I used to make my own cheese, yogurt, etc. from the goat milk, but I guess I'll be holding off on that for the next 8 months or so. I could pasteurize it myself, but it sounds like too much trouble at the moment (busy at work plus pg fatigue ).

Well...there has been some evidence that both soy and flax can affect estrogen levels...and I choose not to use too much of either during pregnancy because of this. Flax is recommended to women going through menopause to help even out their estrogen levels. I did write earlier that I do support everything in moderation. If I did not take fish oil I would probably take the algae form of omega 3s.

On a side note...I am avoiding all the normal things that you are "supposed" to avoid ie alcohol, caffeine etc. during pregnancy. I was just wondering if there were other things people were avoiding. I do think there is some evidence for avoiding or limiting allergenic substances during pregnancy. I read it during my last pregnancy so it's not super fresh in my head.

jumpincholla, I just reread my last post, and realized that it may have come off as sarcastic or defensive--that wasn't at all my intent. I'm totally new to all of this, and I'm just wondering if you or anyone knows what constitutes "excessive" flax? How many mgs are safe, and how much is too much? That way I can look at my vitamins and see if I need to ditch them.

No...sorry I don't know exactly how much would be too much. I am just pretty much trying to eat as little soy and flax as possible. Which probably means having them in a mean once a week...I eat pretty crunchy food so I read a lot of labels and just try to keep those ingredients to a minimum. I'm not sure that there is even a guide for this kind of thing. I think it is really best to be moderate. I wouldn't eat them every day, but that's just me.

Ok, thanks. I guess I'll look into it, and if I can't find any solid info on amount that shows the vitamins are ok, I'll try to find the algae ones instead.

I avoid so many things that I get tired of having to think about what I eat. Soy is in so many things I have to make everything from scratch to be safe. The list of 'hidden' soy ingredients was a real eye opener for me. :

I avoid soy because of estrogen related migraines and the relationship between soy and hypothyroidism.

I avoid tannins in food because of my migraines as well. God, I miss iced tea and bleu cheese.

I limit dairy because I'm a bit lactose intolerant and the whole mucous in dairy thing is just gross.

ugh

I try not to think about it any more than I have to. But it's daily.
