We are off to the ped tomorrow because someone who shall remain nameless has a stinky bellybutton! The nurse said it sounds infected because she has a bit of white oozies coming out... despite her bath twice a week. Does anyone know what they do for this?

The ped said this was no big deal, and indeed it did go away on its own in a week or so. I didn't touch it with anything to clean it, etc. Just let it go.

Good luck at the ped. Hope you get it straightened out. I just have to say I love the word "stank".........no really I do.

The ped will swab it with silver nitrate. It will temporarily look worse (almost raw) but the stink will go away and it will heal great. But beware, the silver nitrate will stain clothing and CDs so use a sposie when/if you have it done. I had to have this with both ds1 and ds2. They both had stinky stumps that would not heal no matter what I did.

Peri's had to be cauterized twice with silver nitrate BUT

*please make sure if you do this that they put vaseline or gauze or SOMETHING to protect the skin AROUND the navel... Peri got some bad chemical burns because the ped did not do this

I also read online that often salt can be used, just google "umbilical granuloma + salt" and you'll see what I mean. Apparently you pour table salt into the navel 2-3 times/day and then rinse and dry well.

For Peri's, hers was bleeding, but not stinking (once the cord fell off) and after the 2nd cauterization and the burns, I said enough was enough. I put calendula on the burns AROUND the bellybutton and then cleaned it with breastmilk well inside (breastmilk and Q-tip) and then dried it well with a baby washcloth and aired it and then sprinkled it full of goldenseal.

Both goldenseal and the silver nitrate stain clothing.
