Midwife Interview!!!

last night i went to a local CPM's house to pick her brain. she was so gracious to make time for me.

i was there for over 2hrs and i asked her about how she became a midwife, what she does when she has a transfer since she is "underground", malpractice, how to protect yourself from prosecution, her thoughts on the other CPM's in the state(we only have 4 CPM's in Delaware), the states current legislation, how advocate for midwives and inform the public, CPM education and programs, her midwifery apprentice's, how many births she does a month, opening a birth center, her desire to start a CPM education program in Delaware, etc. she mentioned i should go to the midwifery conference in March (the week i am "due") i told her i am going, regardless. come hell or high water i am there.

it was very helpful. in fact i think she would be the perfect preceptor. i felt very comfortable with her and i think our personalities clicked.

i told her that i was going to refuse the GD screening and the NST at 40wks, she asked what the birth center midwives thought about that. i told her i hadn't told them yet but that i know i have every right to.

we also talked about the birth center i go to and how my last birth went. she said she doesn't think i will make it to the birth center from where i live, it's an hour away. she thinks that because when i was admitted to be induced i was already in labor and could't tell i was in labor, that i won't be able to recognize the early signs of labor, i was able to talk with ease when my contractions were 2mins apart and i only had 5 hours of HARD labor (dialated from 3-10). i had wondered the same things myself, lol.

so naturally we talked about me having a home birth. the cost, payment plan, etc. i am hoping to set up a meeting where she can come here and meet my husband before Christmas before i leave to go to California for a week. i talked ot him last night about exactly why he preferred the birth center over a home birth. he thinks it's safer because it is only 1/2 block from a hospital. i informed him a birth center is no safer than a home birth and in case of a true emergency we are only 10 minutes from a hospital. also that 9 out of her 10 clients do get reimbursed by their insurance companies.

i am hoping and praying we can convince him.

oh she also lent me two books, Hearts and Hands (autographed copy) and The Birth Partner.

that's all )

That's wonderful! It's always great when you find a midwife you "click" with. Have fun!
