Yeast diaper rash

I took the baby to the Dr. yesterday for his diaper rash. It has been around for 2 weeks and has been getting worse. I went away for 2 days but came back with a vengence.

She thinks it is partly yeast. She said it was possibly a combo rash. She prescribed a cream (and wants me to mix neosporin in it) and I went to have the Rx filled. When it was ready they told me it would be $50! I asked why my insurance didn't cover it and she said that the insurance would cover $184 and that my co-pay would be $50 since it was a new med. WTH!!?? The ingredients are .25% Miconazole Nitrate, 15% Zinc Oxide, and 81.35% White Petrolatum. That is coochie cream, diaper rash cream, and vasline and it is $234??

I have Gentian Violet and Grapefruit seed extract as well as the Miconazole and Lotramin creams. I am not quite sure which method to use first.

I mixed my barrier cream and Miconazole last night and used it and the rash looks a tad bit worse this morning. I really want to stop this rash NOW because it seems to be spreading.

hugs, mama. That sounds awful. And I can't believe how much that cream costs!

I have read that with a yeast infection (I was reading about thrush and BFing) you should *not* use lanolin or other moisture barriers (like petro. jelly etc) b/c it will make the yeast worse. I think I read that on Dr. Jay Gordon's website. you can google it and see.

Good luck getting the rash sorted out.

poor thing... I have known moms to use probiotic paste right on the rash, don't know if it helps but some say it does.... mix probiotic powder with a little tiny bit of water and slather on.. hth

Try white vinegar diluted with water directly on the rash and air dry several times per day.

Also if you have cloth diapers and wipes you might want to strip them and/or boil them?????

I am using both disposables and cloth. I use a spray bottle to clean him and let his tush air dry at each diaper change.

I forgot to mention that I have the Jarrow Baby's Jarro-Dophilus.

I hate that he is so tiny and has this. She wanted me to use anti-fungal, barrier, and antibacterial stuff on him at the same time. I don't know if that means that she really doesn't know what he has, or if it really could be a combination of factors. It seems to me that the anti-fungal and anti-biotic together could cause the problem to get worse.

Also, if it is yeast, how did I manange to get it to go away for 2 days? :

I feel so bad for him. He is just a month old today and he has had this for well over a week.

how do you strip cloth diapers?

how do you strip cloth diapers?
my little guy - 8 months- has a rash too- can't get rid of it- i have let him go diaper-free for whole days and nights and washed all his diapers in those new soap nuts (all natural) and rinsed with vinegar and rinsed and rinsed- tried weleda calendula- a zinc oxide- maybe i need to strip the diapers? but even going diaper-free doesn't help- i definitely wouldn't want to put all that stuff the ped prescribed on- but it is pitiful! good luck!

Antibiotic and antifungal don't "fight" or cancel each other out, so I agree with the ped there. You use both because the fungus creates raw patches, which can then be infected by bacteria. So you can have both problems in one rash. Can you mix Neosporin, regular (not creamy) Desitin and an anti-yeast cream together? That's what I'd do. I'd also switch from regular water to PhisiObebe (Mustela) for the diaper changes because it works so well as a very gentle cleanser.

In terms of stripping, the key is HOT HOT water and a relatively harsh detergent. If you have a warm/warm cycle, turn off the cold water hose so it's hot/hot. If you only have warm/cold, you'll need to babysit the machine and keep resetting it to wash and not rinse. Add a teaspoon of Dawn dish detergent and run 4-5 cycles. If you still see suds in the cycle, keep going.

Soap nuts--you mean those seed thingies? Bad idea with diapers; plant oils cause buildup instantly. Use a normal detergent like Tide (I have had the best results with name-brand Tide, the worst results with cheap detergents like Sun or the store brands) but just enough of it to cause a thin skim of suds during the agitation cycle on warm. If you're filling the machine with suds, you're using too much. If there are no suds at all, you're not using enough.

I cold rinse then soak in hot with Oxyclean for a couple of hours then run a hot cycle with a little Ecos (from Costco).

Not sure if that's considered stripping, but it sure works for me!

Can you call the doc back and ask for an "older" cream, one that your insurance will cover? $50 post-insurance is crazy!

i had success on yeast diaper rash with OTC Wal Mart Brand "Athlete's foot cream." the main ingredient- tolfonate,, is antifungal.

barrier creams made it worse. i never tried antibiotic creme but would probably shy away from petroleum anyways.

if i were you i'd try the miconazole alone, then if it doesn't work go get the stuff i use because it clears it up in like 2-3 diaper changes. and it's like $3

I mixed up a version of the expensive cream. I used the miconizole and some Avalon organics barrier cream and some neosporin. I use just the yeast cream a couple of times and then I use the mixture at night to help since his diapers stay on a bit longer at night.

I change him quite frequently.

As of this morning the rash had spread but tonight it is starting to look better.

I am not gung ho about using creams like that on him but I am also not happy with the rash he had and I am wondering if that has contributed to his fussiness the last couple of days.

Thanks for all the sympathy and suggestions!!
