HELP - Gift for tv-raised 9yr old nephew?

I am in Germany and trying buy for my 9 yr old nephew in the States. The way he has been raised is polar opposite to our kids. He was always put in front of the TV, video games, you name it. Our kids have never seen television or even a movie yet. My quandary - 1) I forget what this age is into 2) I really want to get him a wholesome - possibly European - gift and still come his way a little. I want him to like it! Please help: :

Something cool he can build stuff with? I don't know what's specifically European, but there are lots of neat building toys out there, and plenty of kids who are tv-oriented can get drawn into messing around with them.

Legos.

I really want to get him a wholesome gift They require some fine motor skills, geometry, planning, creativity. I think playing with Legos is very engaging.

and still come his way a little. I want him to like it! You can get Lego kits with all kinds of commercial themes: Harry Potter, Batman, Star Wars, and for the ultimate in all-American obnoxious television-ness: SpongeBob SquarePants.

We love Legos in this house!

Yes! All my nephews love, love, love Lego. My brother loved it also. Lego is a company founded by a Danish man.
