Methergen? for contracting the uterus PP

Anyone know anything about Methergen? The OB I saw today prescribed it for me for 3 days/ 3x day to help my uterus shrink and tighten more- it is still enlarged a little and I'm still PP bleeding quite a bit because of the accident.

Just curious about the safety and anyone's experience with it. He said it was safe with breastfeeding too, but going to ask my LC just in case.

Thanks!!

I was prescribed methergine this week for hemmoraging postpartum after retained placenta. It says not to breastfeed while your on it, actually.
Other than that it worked for me with minimal side effects.
good luck

I've been on ergotamine (same family), though it didn't work all that well. My midwife this time said that cytotec used as a suppository (rectal) is fast becoming a best practice for PPH; she used it on me after this birth and it was very effective (I tend to bleed; pit only works moderately well, but the cytotec made the uterus clamp HARD). The same mechanism that makes cytotec dangerous to use for labor induction makes it fabulous for PPH.

Methergine is safe to use while breastfeeding.

I was on it for three days post partum after delivery Conrad. I hemorrhaged quite a bit with him. They knew I was BFing and didn't have any concerns... I was crampy but that was b/c my uterus was contracting..

Hope that the methergine helps, Manda! I'm assuming the US didn't turn up anything more serious?

Methergine was given to me for hemorrhage just after birth by my homebirth midwives.

When I saw them at 3 weeks PP I was no longer having probs BUT they realized they hadn't left me with any Methergine and they should have. It sounds like the MW assumed the MW she was training would remember to leave it with me and THAT particular MW in training likes to lie and cover her ass. I assured her that NO she hadn't left ANY and hadn't given me ANY instructions to take it.

I had huge clots for quite a while and so all the bleeding left me anemic. But the initial dose og methergine stopped the immediate PP bleeding.

I would take it!
