Please help- need advice about making prefolds!

I was wanting to put my 2 1/2 year old in cloth diapers. He is autistic and I was told he probably won't potty train until 4 or 5. When he outgrows size 6 diapers I don't know what I am going to do. The pull-ups are very expensive.
The problem is he is a big boy. He is 38 lbs and wears a size 3T pants. I borrowed a toddler size prefold from my friend. It fits but wouldn't long enough to get my money's worth.
I was thinking about making some prefolds out of flannel. The instructions I found online said 2 layers of flannel and then 2 layers of terry cloth (from an old towel) in the middle. My question is would this be absorbant enough for a child my size?
Any suggestions?

Someone else will have to help you out here since my little guy is only 1. However, I have used microfiber towels (car detailing towels sold at Walmart, Sams, etc...) instead of normal towels and found them to be VERY absorbant (and inexpensive). Also I don't see why you could not do 3 or even 4 layers of towel inside the prefold. Normally that much bulk would make it hard for a little guy to move, but it shouldn't bother a bigger guy. Just some thoughts.

If you have old cotton t-shirts you can use this tutorial here

You could always just use two prefolds together for more absorbancy or use something like microfiber or hemp in the middle for added absorbancy.

I didn't think my autistic son would every get potty trained. I worked with him for sooo long, but he finally did at 4 and it was just like a light bulb went on all of a sudden and he started doing it on his own. I hope this happens for you too!
