Field trip...to the movies?? - Page 2

What would I do? I'd volunteer to be a chaperone and go with my child, if they didn't need/want more chaperones I'd see if I could attend just as a parent.

You may want to ask also if the theater is 'open to the public' or if it will be a 'prviate showing' just for the school, that may help make your descion easier if you are afraid of the 'dark theater... what can happen'

Field trips in general, there will always be parents who doesn't want their child to go, no matter where the trip is to and for all different types of reasons... that's the reason they send home the permission slip.

zoo, because the animals are locked up
ballet, because people are in skimpy clothing
art museum, nakedness in paintings
natural history musem, because they had fossils
amusement park, because they are commercial
roller rink, because they play music

Sorry, I wrote that before I read the whole thread. It started out as, "Am I the only person who doesn't mind too much?" Then I realized I wasn't and changed, it, but other things were on my mind and I messed up the grammar.

Here's what they have to say about this movie in particular:

If it was me I would do some research on the movie (the above link is good and I also use Movie Mom). If it seemed OK for my sensitive ds I would ask him if he wanted to go and if he did I would probably volunteer to chaperone as I have that luxury if I can get childcare for dd. If he didn't want to go or I thought it was inappropriate he would stay home and we would do something else fun. Other factors like number of students to chaperones, location of theatre, etc would be taken into account as well. I agree with a few others that if it wasn't happening on a regular basis I probably wouldn't make a big deal about it. It's not an ideal field trip but I would probably take that over the classroom party that has tons of juice, cake, candy, etc... Last year My ds's class had a field trip to a local farm and we're vegetarians so it was a learning experience for ds.

With regards to the previews the only other movie I took ds to was The Bee Movie and there were no previews. I thought that was kind of standard for kids movies. Maybe not?

They may not show previews since it is a class trip, some theatres don't turn the lights off or keep them not as dim.

I'd go as a chaperone then if your child got overwhelmed you could take her out.

Here there are no movies during the day so the theatre would be empty other than the school kids. Popcorn/pop is still cheap here($3 for kids size) so that wouldn't be a problem for the majority of people, that's about what the monthly hot lunches cost.

Personally it wouldn't bother me, I'd be glad I wouldn't have to sit through the movie.

There really isn't much different between a film in the gym & going to the theatre other than if it costs anything to the parents or if your child is bothered by previews/loud noises & that is dependant on the theatre

We did a few non-educational field trips in school(public). At the end of the year we went to the provincial park. We couldn't go swimming(no lifeguards), but we had a picnic, went on the paddle boats & I can't remember what else.

When the theatre was still in town(it burned down when I was around 8) they'd take the kids to the theatre & Santa would come there.

Another mom here who is ok w/it. I'm sure the kids will enjoy it, and like others have said, there may be some kids who never get the opportunity to go to the movies and this would definately be a treat for them. I am also one who would be glad that I wouldn't have to sit thru it.
