I can't beleive (as of now) that 37 percent think corporal punishment by school officials is OK. Sick.

OMG, I just be totally naive, but I really had no idea that this was legal anywhere in the country.

In one of dh's education textbooks, it says that over 1000 kids need medical attention every year from corporal punishment injuries in schools.

Also, that it's legal in about half of the US.

Just this morning, the news station reported that one of the school districts in its viewing area is going to re-institute corporal punishment. I'm so angry I can't see straight.

On the bright side, they said it would be the last resort, and there would be a limit of two swats per student per day...SO, I'm figuring a group of kids will take it as meaning "As long as you are willing to be hit twice a day, you can do whatever you want" and wreak havoc on those schools. I really hope they do.

Ok, so I AM naive!

Here's a question, though - do schools that have this in their policy need the parents' permission to use corporal punishment on their children?

Of course, the idea that anyone would give a school principal permission to spank their child - that is just sick beyond belief.

In this instance: Yes, parental permission is required. I can't imagine letting someone else hit my child either.

I have heard of school districts that require parents to specify that their children NOT be spanked, and, worst of all, school districts where the parent doesn't even get a say in the matter.

so many reasons i'm glad i am homeschooling, add this one to my list. :

i admit to struggling with gentle discipline myself. but if a teacher or principal ever dared to lay a hand on my son, the you know what would hit the fan. that is sick.

Well it's at 28% now, but that's still really troubling. I can't believe that high a percentage think it's ok:

At least there's an opt-out provision. Some places will spank a child against the expressed wishes of the parent.

Alabama corporal punishment story.

Sick, isn't it?

This is the wrongest thing I have heard in a long time! How can it be illegal for a parent to hit a child and legal for a teacher to do so?! What if the kid had bruised the teacher? What if the parent went and kicked the teacher's ass? Would that be OK? And what exactly is so bad about nose picking????!

I e-mailed the article to my dh, who is studying to be a teacher, so he knows never to move to Alabama.

T
Vibrators are illegal in Alabama. I guess women masturbating in the privacy of their own homes is a lot worse than teachers assaulting little kids so severely they need to go to the ER.

While I am homeschooling, all I can say is that if ANYONE ever hit one of my children, well they'd be looking at more trouble than they could ever dream of!
