Would a nipple stimulation induced labour be too violent??

So...

I was sitting in my bath tub following the suggestion of doing nipple stimulation on each breast for 15 minutes under warm water, and they came - STRONG and within 3 minutes!!

They continued even after I had stopped, but I did not continue: I became a bit scared because they were VERY strong and did not have those nice peaks and valleys of naturally starting labour, KWIM? in fact, they did feel a bit like when I had pitocin once...

What I am wondering is: if I were to continue for the 2 - 3 hours recommended, would I end up with a pitocin-like labour? Or would my body's contraction patterns normalize after labour picked up on its own?

I am 39 weeks + 5 days by the way, and I have been having serious prodromal labour for over 2 week now.

Taking notes.

I did this last night with dh and they weren't horrible strong and painful, but close and consistent for awhile.

I would assume contraction patterns would normalize once labor picked up... I've never done nipple stimulation to induce and I'm not sure it would do any good in my case. DD#2 is still nursing strong and I don't usually even have contractions when she nurses... even last night when she was sick and wanted to nurse *all night long*...

I'd be interested to hear others thoughts too.

Quindin, I am also interested in answers to your question.

I have a question of my own, too -- is toddler nursing sufficient nipple stim to get things going? Because like Frogleymom, said, I am still nursing and not getting ctx from it.

I have actually heard several times that nipple stimulation can cause wicked contractions and must be used cautiously. But my 2 year old wanted to "nurse" a day or two ago (she is for all intents and purposes weaned but nurses for about 30 seconds once in a while) and it didn't do a thing...

DH and I were ABSOLUTELY sure the baby was coming last night!! He was timing me and it looked very promising!!

Then we DTD thinking it would help speed things up... and then it all stopped

It is all DH's fault!!

I hope you didn't tell him that after he's been so supportive! Your baby has it's own time-table for sure. You need to keep saying out loud that it's nice and comfy out here. I keep telling dd that she's better off staying IN.

I had nursed my son through entire pregnancy w/o contractions. Once labor is already happening I found the nursing to have a pitocin like effect---fast and furious! After my water broke at 1AM, my son nursed for about 10 minutes and wow did the contractions come after that, major buzzing sensation and intense contractions on top of each other. I really tried to slow things down once at the hospital and baby did slow it down prior to pushing phase. I was able to keep my focus however and there's definitely benefits to a fast labor. Baby Arin was born at 4:50 AM Dec. 7th (Due date was 12/10). Nipple stimulation definitely works but probably not until baby is ready to come anyway!

Best of luck,
Mama doo
