Are your labors a lot like your mom's labors?

So i was telling my mom about my contractions last night, which woke me up and were painful but that then subsided. And she said that if my labors are like hers (and my first one was, a fast, unmedicated labor with dd#1), then the baby will probably come in the next 24-48 hours. She said she never had contractions like that too far in advance, instead they preceded true labor only by a day or two.

Anyway, I guess I just was hoping that she's right, I want to have this baby soon! Are your labors anything like your moms?

Yep, which scares me. My mom either went REALLY late (like 43+ weeks) or her water broke, and was induced for all of us. She had super short labors and pushed us all out with one-ish push. We were all big babies. So far, my water has broke twice, and I had to be induced. I had super short (but hellish) labors and pushed my kids out like cannonballs, with one or two pushes. Only difference is that my babies aren't gigantic like my mom's. (I was over 11lbs at birth, and my mom had twins that were over 8lbs each)

Yeah... in a way.

My mom had pretty short labors in the scheme of things. I know mine was pretty short for a first time labor. It was only 9 hours. My next labor was slightly longer because I would NOT allow them to break my water and it broke only when I was pushing.

Mine wasn't. My mom was one of those 24 hour of of hard labor, slow to progress, needed pitocin types and I moved along just fine.

Mine wasn't, though not sure if that was based on the fact that mine started with spontaneous membrane rupture or not. My mom's always took a while until they broke her water--then she went really quickly. Hardly any pushing (she says 10minutes for each). Mine was intense and relatively quick for a first labor (9 hours) but pushing was 1 1/2 hours of that. Mom had saddle block anesthesia for pushing phase, though, and I was her first and was 3 weeks early and small (6 lb 9 oz). I, on the other hand, had a past-due, 8lb 2 oz LO and no drugs, so I think I was probably a bit more tentative in pushing and not very effective for the first 45 minutes or so.

Pregnancies, however, seem to have a lot of similarities, and our one delivery-related point of consistency so far is carrying a ton of fluid and blood (lots of swelling during pregnancy) and delivering both baby and placenta with a big *gush*. Think tsunami. Attendees need wear rain gear. :

My moms first labor was days and then ended in a c-section and continued with the rest of us. So 4 c-sections total. But thank goodness my first wasn't days long like hers.

My first one was nothing like any of my moms, but that could have been circumstantial because I lived on the east coast during hurricane season?

Yea, she doesn't have any pictures, but I'm sure she was a spectacle! She is a small woman, about 5'4", weighs about 100-110 lbs. Goes to show, it has nothing to do with your size about birthing babies.

Kind of. My first was due on her EDD and was a 25 hour labor. I was my mom's first and overdue with a 36 hour labor. Two of my brothers she was induced with and I've had 2 inducements, too. My middle brother she went into labor naturally with and had him start to finish in under 1.5 hours. Maybe this kid will be the same!

I also got lucky to join the club in my family for no c-sections, and no episiotomy. No women in my family ever have. Of course, I wasn't lucky enough to join the no stretch marks club. :

Not to hijack the thread but yesterday my MIL told my husband that his cousin had had her baby.......Via scheduled Cesarean. Why? They estimated the baby at 7.5 lbs (which actually was right on, baby was 7 lbs 7 oz) and because she is Asian so they told her she'd be too small to deliver vaginally!

I read somewhere you are more likely to labor like your sisters than your mother, but my sister doesn't have children and my labors have been similar to my mom's. Though she didn't go past her EDD, but then she stopped at 2.

Pushing phase goes really quickly.

WIth my first lo I didn't go into labor I had a c-section because he was breech. My mom had short easy labors. With me she didn't even know she was in labor she was just having back pain, she was spoting but she thought nothing of it. I was born at 31wks 2lbs 10 oz. My brother was a 3 hour start to finish labor and my sister was I think a 4 hour start to finish labor(2 wks late). My mom had small babies 7lbs and under. My 1st was 8lbs 11 oz.

My sister had her 1st baby in July and she had a start to finish labor of 2 hours. She barely made it to the hospital. He was 7 lbs 2 oz.

So my sister takes after my Mom with labors.

I hope I will take after them with this pregnancy!!!

Mine have both been similar to my mothers, I think it's partly because I expected them to be, and partly because I am like a carbon copy of her and have the same build which I think is a factor.

my mom's first labor was 36 hours and mine was 41 hours. so i'm holding out hope that this means that my next labor will be 3 1/2 hours, like her 2nd labor was.

My mom's water broke and they headed to the hospital. She was very calm and had no obvious contractions so they just stuck her in a room. . . not too long after she said she was going to push and they didn't believe it, sure enough it was time. I think that's what is going to happen to me.
not much warning

Not sure about labor but my mom went 2+ weeks past her EDD with me and past the EDD with the other 3. I'm sure on that track at 41+6 today.
My mom ended up having an emergency c-section because of a placental abruption (being a smoker back in the 70’s I’m sure is what caused it) with me and had subsequent c-sections so there’s no way to know how long her labors would have been.

Nope - my mom had seven children, the first four natural... labor always started with water breaking, then quick labors (I was her longest... 4.5 hours), the last three were induced a week early and labor averaged 2.5 hours.

My first was 13 hours, slow semi-consistent progress, lots of back labor, AROM... 4 hours of pushing ending with a posterior baby.

DD#2 was 8 hours, mild contractions for 7 hours (where I managed to dilate from 3cm to 5cm)... spontaneous ROM and another hour of very intense contractions ending with a very short pushing phase with a perfectly anterior baby.

I'm actually pretty convinced that my mother and I have similar labors... except that she just didn't feel anything before her water broke.

I don't know yet, but I'm hoping so. My mom had two short labors with very little warning (for the middle labor, she was induced around my dad's business trip and seriously regretted it.) But for both her first and her third birth, where she went into labor spontaneously, she didn't even realize she was in labor until somebody told her so. Then she gave birth three or four hours later. With me, she thought she was just feeling a little under the weather and her back was bothering her, went to a neighbor's house for a cup of coffee and scared the bejeezus out of the neighbor when they realized she was in active labor.
My sister had a fairly short labor as well, from about 2 a.m. to 11 a.m., but she said the intense part only last for, like, two or three hours.
All three of us have had super easy and boring pregnancies.
