2008 in 2008 (we're decluttering!) - Page 3

I would like to join. The house we are in used to belong to DH's parents. His mom is a complusive shopper/ hoarder and part of the "deal" to buy the house was that we would clean it out. We got it for a lot less money, but a lot more aggrevation! I've been slowly weeding things out. I have found though, that DH can't get rid of things! He has some old ties that he hasn't worn in probably 10 years, and he about had a fit when I told him I was going to use them in a craft project. But if I don't tell him I'm getting rid of stuff, he usually never misses it.

I'm in! I could use the challenge to motivate me. That's an average of about 38 items per week. Just over 7 items per day Monday through Friday. I can do that!

I'm going to try so hard to get dh on board. I could go absolutely nuts with decluttering if he would let go of some things. We talked about it last weekend though, after helping my parents move. I said they could have tossed half of what they have (lots of things purchased at a garage sale only to be stored at home because it was a good deal). I lived like that the whole time I was at home and now I love how great I feel to let things go. Dh is a packrat and knows it. I'm going to work on him though and see if we can take some baby steps.

This is my first post here. I'm interested in tossing 2008 things throughout the year. I'm assuming we are not including everyday garbage?

I'm curious about this as well. I would assume that regular trash (wrappers, what-have-you) doesn't count, but does "stuff" that gets thrown away in the midst of decluttering count?

(Yes, I know it's better to donate or repurpose, but I have a really hard time getting random junk (clothes are always donated) out of my house. Sometimes it's just easier to throw it in the trash can. )

I've already started donating stuff, but I'm not going to count it. I'm going to start on January 1st. I've got plenty of stuff to get rid of, it won't hurt to get a head start...

My laundry room is cleared out, my kitchen has been gone through and weeded out, and the hall closet only has what belongs in it. So, my main goal is the clothes - I am giving myself the entire month of January to do this. February will be the month to go through the play room - ruthlessly, of course. Then the rest of the year will be taken up by the basement....yikes!

Im in. We've decluttered a bunch before we moved last week but our apartment is small and has no closet space. we would greatly benefit from this.
Im going to focus on clothes and art work/framed photos/decoration things.

I like how you broke it down into "7 items per day". That doesn't sound bad at all! I was getting a bit panicked at the idea of one-hundred and sixty-seven items per month. Seven per day is totally do-able though!

I cleaned out my desk yesterday and got started on my decluttering. My desk is HUGE with lots of nooks and crannies. I got rid of things like: a Windows 98 CD, a manual for a printer we no longer own, unidentified USB cables, 1/2 a deck of cards, a broken stapler - not to mention the amount of plain TRASH. But item wise I got rid of 37 things! YAY!

So, I'm at 37/2008 so far!

okay the last 3 days have proven just how much crap I have. So far between yesterday and today I am at 156. Add that to the 118 from before and I am at 274/2008 in only 3 days and I have piles and piles still int eh basement and in closets to go through. I can't wait to be rid of all of it and regain that space and control

Ooh, are we all starting early? We're getting ready to move, so it's the PERFECT time to start counting.

I'm at 5/2008. I'm amazed at the stuff that I've held onto through three moves, and as I'm finding it all again, wondering WHY I've kept whatever it is all that time just to have it sit in a closet.

I am so in. Since my father passed away I have this incredible urge to get rid of all the junk in my house (a much needed dejunkification). Too bad I already got rid of alot of junk before I saw this thread. Although, that should not be much of an impediment since dh and I and the children accumulate on a daily basis.

I'm getting rid of all the POS toys that DS has gotten in his kid's meals (wwwwhhhhhyyyyyy do we need a plastic thing that looks like a spilled milkshake??) and regifting/donating all his baby baby toys to daycare, etc. And I've got probably 7 boxes of outgrown clothes (his) and unused/old clothes (mine)... We haven't even gotten to spring cleaning yet!!

I am on this big purge-out with all of our closets, just finished the boys and got rid of 203 things just in there! I could not believe all the crap they had accumulated in there! Broken parts, batteries, chewed on magnets, etc... It was insane how much I managed to toss. Took me alllll day long but it looks so good now! Now I am on to my closet. My big issue is paers. I tend to cling to stuff like old letters, cards,e tc... for sentimental value but am learning to cut way back on the amount. I am setting out one smallish bin for each closet and once it is filled, no more papers are allowed to be saved. I have to decide what I REALLY want/need to keep.

For me, everyday garbage does not count, but say I am cleaning my closet and find an empty container..I will count that.

My plan is to start to declutter January 1st. I plan to take a picture of every room in my house ( this scares me ) and post it here for all to see and then take a monthly photo beginning Feb. 1st.

I have had me eyes on many things that are going out in 2008.

finally got a large load off to the thrift store. mostly DH clothes (he's lost a lot of weight and need new things) and toys/outgrown kids clothes. Also some never used wedding presents (we have been married 15 years!!)

I bet getting rid of wedding presents that have sat unused for 15 years felt so good and freeing.

Also I bet your DH said good riddance to his "bigger" clothes.
