knitting help needed

I'm teaching myself to knit- actually 30 years ago my grandmother taught me, but I was not very good at it. I can cast on easily- it was like my hands remembered how. But I've tried internet instructions and a book and I can't get that first knit stitch after hours of trying. Is there a place or way to to do this that worked for you if you are self-taught? I know once I get this I'll be on a roll... until I hit the problem LOL...

OK- I was a real dummy here LOL. I didn't know to switch needles and was trying to keep the stitches on the first needle. Well, I had suddenly realized that I move the stitch to the next needle.. and voila... I am knitting away... at a potholder.
