If you could have your own self-contained homeschool room, what would you put in it?

We're building a house and I will have my own homeschool "messy project" room.

I'm interested in ideas of what to put in it, in terms of set-up. Right now, I know we need a cheap table we can bang up. We'll be doing art in this room, in addition to science and other projects. It's not a lesson room, rather a project room. We'll obviously need shelves. It has a window for ventilation, which is good for dissection and other strong-smelling projects. I want a partial clothes-line to run across part of the room, so we can hang paintings to dry. I think we'll have a small sink. I'm interested in some cheap peg-board so we can hang small containers (like for wood bits or whatever) and so that we can change the configuration. I'm thinking that I want one wall of the room to be a wall where the kids can paint it themselves. I'd love them to put colorful hand-prints but I think ds1 has a plan of making a mural. I have a ton of posters we could use, including a large wall map but I'm not sure if we'll have room for all that now if we do peg-board and a kids' mural.

What else would you put in a self-contained homeschool room of your own? Again, it will basically be a messy project room. I want it to efficiently store stuff but also encourage creativity. Can anyone think of other cool set-up ideas we can use? I should add that my husband is having a woodworking shop in the basement so we won't need room for wood-working tools and such. Any ideas?

Oh! And I meant to say that if anyone has any pictures, I'd love to see them!

i'd put a multi purpose table where my kids could do work, crafts, etc. i'd have a computer table in there, book shelves filled, a comfy place to read with good lighting, maybe a tv/dvd player, definitely a cd player for music, maps on the walls, a shelf filled with board games...my kids are young so i'd dedicate a wall to display their artwork and creativity....maybe a chalkboard or white board......an art easel.....microscope...globe....fish tank.....

how big is this room?

That's exciting! would want a very large project table for ongoing work. I'd also want some shelves for displaying finished items. I'd also want an art cabinet, for all the art supplies and craft stuff. How about a drying rack?

Laundry sink with running water would be a nice addition to your plan. Shelves and shelves and shelves and drawers. A robot vacuum.

A magnetic wall. We tried the magnetic paint -- yucky stuff and isn't strong enough. So we are going to get some sheet metal and screw it up. We had been using cork and tacks for displaying artwork, but magnets are so much nicer so you don't get holes in the artwork.

I'd get a really good microscope and a light table.

the key to magnetic paint is multiple coats....
kind of a pain i know - but it does work

We have a similar room off the kitchen and have counters with 3-drawer units underneath in a couple of places with room to push stools in between. We have computers and a microscope on top. The wall over part of it is still empty but will have sheet metal painted with White Board paint (they make that now!). We have a tall shelving unit with doors filled with science books and bins of craft supplies. We're looking for those roll-up maps like classrooms have to put over the window since we often need them for reference and don't want to waste the only wall on them.

We sit on the floor, which is carpeted, and do clean crafts and reading and I want to add a huge bean bag "bed" that can double up under the window when not used. I wish I had more wall space to put tall storage cabinets and shelves though. We do painting on the island in the kitchen so having a large central table with a good sealed top for easy cleaning would be smart or even putting on a sheet of Formica yourself would work. Definitely have a sink.

Absolutely a sink. And a long wall of floor -to -ceiling shelves...with one of these library ladders.

Here is our school room. I also have a bunch of "administrative" type stuff next to my desk in my office area.

Flooring that is easy to clean spills off of, but not too cold to bare feet (unless you all don't lose socks as professionally as we do).

Built-in speakers so we can play music, listen to audiobooks, etc.

Bookcases, bookcases, bookcases and more bookcases, a big comfy chair (or two), good for lounging comfortable and reading books in (preferably a chair big enough for two), a nice big project table (or two), easels and plenty of good light but also good window coverings because nothing tires the eyes more than direct bright sunlight.

How about chalkboard paint on one of the walls?

This is such a great opportunity ... hope you have a ball building your room!

A big ol chalkboard or dry erase marker board
tons and tons of storage space
great lighting
a sink

I am utterly jealous and wish we didn't live in a tiny apartment! Someday.......

I didn't mean to drop this thread! Holiday craziness got the best of me and I totally forgot about it. I REALLY appreciate all your great ideas. Unfortunately, I've recently learned that we will not be sheetrocking the basement (where the homeschool rooms is) due to funds. I mean, the builder's crew won't be doing it. Dh has plans of attempting it by himself at some point. It's framed and plumbing is roughed in. It will need sheetrock. So anyway, it looks like my plans are temporarily sidetracked. Meanwhile, we'll be using the laundry room and the backyard for our messy projects and the toy room for storage.

But I've been sharing your great ideas with dh and we have them knocking around in our heads until we get a chance to sheetrock.

Thanks again!!

We're unschoolers, so I would want a room like those in Grover and the Everything in the Whole Wide World Museum.
I loved that book when I was little. It struck me as so funny for some reason.

I'd love to have a room like that. I'd probably combine it with a play room as well. I'd have all the books, desks/tables, computer, art area, lots of floor space and posters and maps all over the walls.

Raingutter book shelves are great, and not expensive!

Here's our playroom/schoolroom: (We do end up all over the house though).

Pic

We've taken the train table out and dh is putting together a kitchen table sized table and chairs to put in there so we can all sit around together. There is a small table in there right now for the little kids. We mostly sit on the loveseat and beanbag chairs. There are toys in there too, I didn't really want it to feel "schoolish". We love arranging the books on the raingutter shelves.
