Do you go out to eat? What do you order? - Page 2

Our food co-op has a deli. I go there and get the 'real' food without soy on the ingredent list. At least it is organic and made from fresh whole foods.

We really only go out for ethnic food. We have an Indian restaurant that is incredible. I mean, it's one of those places where ALL of the cooks and half of the waitstaff can't speak English. Love those places! Their veggie dishes and curries are amazing, and the papadum satisfies my carb cravings.

We also have a Peruvian restaurant that we usually go to and their food is very "clean" (you know what I mean?) and fresh and local, so I love supporting them. They also handmake their salsa .

We only have a handful of places we'll eat around where we are. Some things we almost always ask at a restaurant are what type of oil you use, and do you have whole wheat/brown rice/whole grain?

Salads -- We try to stick with a plain oil and vinegar dressing. I avoid raw cabbage, broccoli, and other cruciferous veggies in my salad.

Veggies and fruits -- We try to stick with those that are low in pesticides. This means avoiding things like berries, potatoes, peppers, green beans and instead chosing things like bananas, asparagus, and broccoli.

Meats -- Unless we know it's organic, we avoid poultry and pork out. We choose lamb where possible, followed by goat or harder to raise animals, followed by beef. Exception -- we will eat bacon when traveling.

Eggs -- We eat freely as long as it's whole. So hardboiled eggs, over easy or fried eggs; avoid omelets, scrambled eggs, or other mystery egg products.

Seafood -- DH has a mercury sensitivity so we look for wild caught, low mercury types such as salmon, butterfish, and codfish. We will sometimes put our feelings about sustainability aside and eat farm-raised shellfish.

Oils -- Except for peanut oil, we try to avoid any cooked vegetable oils. We avoid canola, soybean, and corn oil where possible, cooked or uncooked, since they are often GM. Most decent restaurants will cook with olive oil or butter if they have it on hand and you request it. We avoid synthetic/processed oils such as margarine and shortening.

Dairy -- We eat butter, sour cream, non-processed cheese types, and pretty much any cultured dairy food freely but avoid having too much milk and cream out.

Breads and grains -- Eat whole where possible. White rice is okay and doesn't seem to make us sick or set us off much. We've learned to spot the "white" wheat or fake whole grain. In general, we will choose rice or other grains over wheat products when out.

We also try to avoid eating most GM foods out such as soy (also for the other reasons), corn, canola.

Chain Restaurants --
We also love Chipotle! We usually get a burrito bowl with a little bit of rice, beans, meat, salsa, sour cream, cheese, and lettuce.

We have Five Guys around here and will eat their burgers without the buns. We either bring our own buns or eat the patties and veggies only.

Nonchain Restaurants --
Hands down, for us, sushi is our favorite. Close second is Indian food, although some of the curries make us sick. Many of the Indian restaurants actually use vegetable or soybean oils so you have to be careful. Unless we know the restaurant well, we tend to go for the grilled items such as lamb chops since that has minimal if any oil added.

I'm lucky enough to live in a city with more restaurants per capita than, like, anywhere else in the world, I think. And ALL the upscale ones, and some of the more family-oriented ones, are way big into fresh, local food. So honestly, eating out is NOT a problem for me. My favourite place is called Brasserie L'Ecole, which is amazing french food. We also like a local Vietnamese place, it's not very TF what with all the white rice/noodle dishes, but there is this amazing dish with udon noodles, coconut sauce (which has white flour and white sugar in it), shredded pork, bbq pork, shredded carrot and bean sprouts - and then you pour the standard fish sauce/chile-garlic-vinegar sauce thingy over it and stir it all up... I don't care how not TF it is, it is totally one of the best things I've ever tasted. :

Um. Anyway, there is also a very, very good charcuterie near me that does lunches (two choices only! take it or leave it!) that are pretty consistently fabulous too. They're sort of usually french/german style, and they do REAL sauerkraut and nice braised meats and things. And lots of restaurants here use House Breads, which are whole wheat fermented natural yeast loaves, so that's nice.

Anyway, if I wanted to be all hardcore TF, I could totally still eat out in a lot of places around town. (And I might add, if you're a TF'er looking for a good vacation spot, I can highly recommend hitting northern coastal Washington State (Seattle-Port Angeles and area) and Vancouver Island. LOTS of awesome food around here.)

We actually have a very TF restaurant in the area that features local grass fed meat and local veggies. I haven't been there yet tho.

Really, if I'm going out to eat, I order whatever I want - usually something Mexican oriented, pasta or something with rice/veggies or else eggs.

I'm mostly veg - eat tons of eggs, raw or fermented dairy, weekly fish and once in a while some pastured, organic, farm fresh chicken. I won't eat any meat that is not raised and butured on the farm, so restaurant meat is pretty much out for me.
