Credit card refund--real or a scam?

So I got a letter recently that stated that there had been legal action against several credit card companies (including mine) and that they had reached a settlement whereby clients who had used their credit cards outside of the US during a certain time periosd where entitled to a partial refund of fees charged. According to their info, I would be in for a little money (not much--probably about $25).....

So do I respond with my claim? Or is this a scam? It all looks official (with legal case numbers, lawyers' names, etc), but credit card scams have gotten so clever these days.

Has anybody heard of this?

There was a successful class action suit against a number of card companies for exactly that. As to whether your letter is legit... I can't be certain. But the lawsuit is real and has been won on behalf of cardholders for overcharging on non-US transactions.

It may be legit, I often get letters about class action lawsuits against companies I've done business with.

Best way to check would be Google some key info from the letter and see if you can find information about the lawsuit online, or if you find warnings of it being a scam, etc. You can Google the names of the law offices, if they seem legitimate, lookup their main number and call it directly (rather than a number listed in the letter) and ask about the lawsuit.

It is legit. I got the same thing in the mail and I filled out the info online. I did use my credit card in Europe in the summer and fall of 2006 and was charged ridiculous fees. My total charges were under the amount listed in the mailing, so I opted for the quick $25.00 payout. I also used my company credit card. My employer got the same mailing for my expenses charged to the company account. Their payout will be a little more, though. Thank goodness I saved all my expense reports and receipts since they will have to turn that information in.

So he must have gone somewhere during that time frame? That would explain why my mother and I did not get the form. We were feeling left out.

I got one but hadn't left the country, so I did not submit it since it said only people who had out of country transactions were eligible.

I wonder if something you might not be thinking of... like maybe an eBay transaction with a Canadian?

DH and I got one each too.

I got one too. I read it and said "Woo hoo! Free money!"

You do not have to have physically left the country to qualify for this refund. If you ordered something by mail, phone, or online from another country you also qualify.
