Oh, dear - in what way? - Lillian
things like ----

the MS school teacher to be who said "oh I don't like to read, i just do it if i have to for school"

or the sloppy way they dress on "pratice day" when they are supposed to look like they are going into an interview.

or the ones who she advises who want to take the BARE MIN required, and not one extra child dev class or lit class or anything ....

the many who want to do the bare min to do the project, pass the class or whatever ....

she just says the the quality is not what it was 30 years ago when she started .....

Aimee, I have friends who teach at a state college, and I've listened to them talk about the about the amazing things they deal with day in and day out. One of them has been at it for about 30 years. Over the years, she's described the changes she's seen in incoming students. Today's students worry her much more than any she's ever seen over the years with the ebb and flow of various social and educational trends that affect young people before they get to college. So it's not just the ones in elementary ed. What you describe are some of the kinds of things I've heard my friends discuss- especially the part about them wanting to keep requirements down to a bare minimum. One finally responded to students who complained about the amount of material she was presenting with, "Look, you're paying for this - I'm not going to shortchange you by holding back on the information I have to offer you!" She meant that sincerely - she wasn't being sarcastic - she really wants to give them the benefit of all the immense knowledge she's picked up over the years, but she's not finding much interest in anything beyond the credit her classes can provide.

And the No Child Left Behind generation has not even hit the colleges yet... It's worrisome... - Lillian
