OK...I went NUTS today - I bought ALL KINDS of scrapbooking stuff, I mean I went crazy! Here's the problem:

WHAT DO I DO NOW?

I have scapbooked a VERY little in the past. I am NOT artistic or creative at ALL. But I got all this beautiful stuff and don't wanna mess it up.

Anyone have any good beginner tips? I am scared it will just be alot of $ wasted.

Are themes good? Or do you just "whatever" it?

Pointers, please?

TIA!!!

Ok- assuming you really don't know where to start-
Decide what kind of book you are doing- is it a baby book for one child? A family book? A Theme or anything goes? I've done all different kinds, I personally think that starting with one that is just to chronical your life is a good one. If you got drop loaded pages, you can work on any date you want, and rearragne them in order later, if its bound, you will want to decide on a start date to work from.

Then all you have to do is pick which pictures you want to work with first (a specific date or theme- like "Baby's first Bath" or "Hanging out with Grandpa"), select pictures for the page, crop them, lay out all your decorations and what-nots on the page before you start glueing/taping them down. I also like putting your journalling or stickers/title on a seperate piece of paper so it can be moved around the page as you figure out how to make it all fit. After you are happy with it, tape it down. Last touch is adding a few stickers if you want or such. Ta-DA!

Good luck- know that your pages will get better as you practice, but you will do fine!

Thanks!
That's why I was asking about themes, I am not sure what I want re: that. I kind of want to chronicle my pregnancy but I don't have anything! (No US & very few pics...)
I LOVE the idea of adding journaling! I never would have thought of that. I have wrote a few letters to the baby & snippets would be a nice idea.
Great advice, thank you again!
I have it all on my table, I am so scared to start though, I feel like I'm gunn'a blow it. Just need to dive in I suppose!

Just dive in! Let the pictures lead you to a theme, not the other way around. And- you can do a whole page with just one picture- decorate with some cute stuff and write about what was going on, or what you want people to read later in the book.

you are going to do fine!

Keep it simple. The more "stuff" you add to a page, the more cluttered it looks and the more it takes away from your pics. I mount the pictures on pretty cardstock or paper, use alphabet letters for the title of the page and a few stickers and I love the way my books look.

I agree with choosing a theme ahead of time. I do a "first year" book then just work chronologically.

I also can't say enough about these scrap pads:

They are precut paper and cardstock and they come in every theme imaginable. They're awesome!!

Have fun with it!!

Thanks guys!

I agree keeping it simple is best. I'm ready...just still searching for a theme.

I'm thiking maybe of doing the first book a "sister" book of the 2 girls.

...Do you all decorate the covers too? How does that work? Just decorate it like a regular page?

my tip is pick a theme for the pictures say. picture of son playin in the mud. then take a colors from the pictures and make theose colors in your page. the colors can be from his shitr, the mud, his shoes the sky whatever this will make it flow.

as for a scrapbook I do a basic Family scrapbook, all family memories and baby memories included. I add everything special or fun in it. That way all the memories are in one place instead of having 43 diffrent books,

Have fun and just dive in i love the fact that in my book you can see my progress you will too!

oh an journaling is the best part so dont forget it! also check out the do it your self website www.diynetwork.com and clock on scrapbooking - tons of ideas there.

Can I jump in and ask a few questions?

I started scrapbooking a couple months ago. It's great, now. My pages aren't nearly as extravagent as some of the examples online--but they're still pretty and original.

How many pages long can you make a book? I have 20 pages in a book (not all complete yet) and it doesn't seem like I'll be able to put more in there. Just seems that with more pages, the book will barely close.

I have about 5 or so pages on pregnancy. Should I keep that in the baby book or put those few pages in a separate book? I guess it's a personal decision...I just don't know what to do. (I've done all pages in 12x12 size).

For First Christmas (with a million pics : ) should I do a separate album for that or (try) to include it in baby book?

I'm just confused. Are you supposed to have a bunch of different albums or try to jam everything into one book (which I don't think is possible). For the record, I'm not using every photo--but there's still a lot to scrap.

TIA, sorry for taking over thread

Well, my scrapbooks are pretty thick, so I'm not sure the exact pages in each. But right now I have scrapbooks for each girl, one for school, and one for our summer vacations. Otherwise, everything else goes in their scrapbooks. For my oldest, she has two scrapbooks right now, and she's six, so you can have as many albums as you want!!

Really, it's all about personal style. I have one scrapbook that is just a Family Book. Everything goes in there. When it's full, I'll move onto book 2. It's organized chronologically, but I don't work on it that way. I have always heard that it is better to start in present day and work back. I'm still working on my 5yo's first year! And then it skips to my DS being 18 months, then his brother being born, etc. Still a lot of gaps for me to fill in!

I go through my pictures and print the ones that I like. Then I create 'themes' based on what pictures I have available. First Bath, Soccer, Disney, etc. Sometimes I will do "comparison" pages - like my older DS wearing the same birthday boy crown on his first birthday and fifth birthday. As I have scrapbooked more, I have found my picture-taking to have changed. I now take pictures with the intent to scrapbook them! Like at the apple orchard, I took a picture of the sign that showed the name of the orchard. Or, my DS in front of the chalkboard that said "Welcome to Maine Apple Sunday". That helps my journaling when I don't get to scrapbooking that event for awhile.

How thick your book can be depends on the book, I suppose. I only use Creative Memories albums, and I think that they recommend that your albums should only hold approximately 30 pages. But, that will vary based on your embellishments. If you don't use too much background papers and stickers, then the page is less thick than if you had four layers of papers on there, kwim?

Another fun thing to do is to find a scrapbooking crop in your local area. I go to crops about once a month. It is a lot of fun to scrapbook with others, and you get so many good ideas by looking at what other people have done!

Now, if only I could set up a place in my house to scrapbook and leave everything out, I might get more done.

I learned from my mom, and tend to do things how she did...she has about two dozen albums from 25years and 9 kids...

I buy BIG FAT binders. I do keep a little baby book for eah child for about their first year, but otherwise everything is in the big family books. Occasionally we get a special binder for a special trip (such as going to Europe for amonth when i was in college). My mom has started keepign a separate book for the weddings (two of us are married) but otherwise, everything is in the big books. Each binder tends to hold a couple of years of photos (on average...)

When I scrapbook, my goal is to display our photos and other memorabelia in an accessible manner--but my books are about the photos. I usually have 3-5 photos per page, sometimes more. Every once in a while (maybe one of every 50 pages?) there is a photo taht deserves to be by itself...but that is just so so so rare for me. I almsot never do it. SO, I'm always looking for ways to get lots of photos on the page.
I use only certain types of embellishments: stickers, die-cuts, and borders. Plus pens and scissors of course. I don't do anything 3-D (no eyelets, ribbons, buttons, etc). I just decided I had to draw a line somewhere, and IMO using the bulky stuff takes away from the photos. So I keep it strictly FLAT. I think bulky things kinda destroy the whole page-protector concept anyway.

Occasinoally I browse throgh a scrapbookign magazine or something to get ideas, but I rarely end up liking anything from them. They are just too over the top for me.

I always try to save things that go with the pictures--for example, I saved the hospital bracelets when ds was born, and they are in the book by the pictures. i save ticket stubs, so next to the picture of me on the eiffel tower is the ticket stub... Those other thigns are not acid-free, so I just make sure they do not touch the actual photos.

Like a pp said, I love adding journaling with the pages.

At the end of each year, I take all the photos people sent with their christmas cards (plus wedding/baby announcements form the year, etc) and make a couple pages of "friends and family". I like to keep the photos, and that was how I decided to do it. If I get an announcement to a wedding that I'm not able to attend, for example,t hen it doesn't really fit in with the sequence of photos during the year...but if I have a designated place at the end of the year for all that stuff, I just think it flows better...

I also like scrapbooking with others, or looking at other's books. It helps inspire me. I find that when I do a whole bunch of pages all together, they tend to look the same...so I like to see what others are doing, and/or skip around (do a couple pages for teh baby book, then a couple from a vacation, etc) to keep things broken up. Otherwise I'll be goingthrough a book and think "wow, I was really into circles when I made that" or something. kwim? It's not as visually appealing or interesting.

My biggest tip would be to cut less rather than more... Trim photos, sure...but don't cut them WAY down very often. Every now and ten it's nice to cut out the person, but much of the time that ends up looking choppy imo...so i tend to use ovals and circles and nice straight edges about 98% of the time. I do use the fancy scissors on photos now and then, but mostly I use them for borders and things like that.

Hey, can we have a thread for sharing favorite scrapbook pages we've done? Share the inspiration?! That would be AWESOME!!!

What is your goal? Is it to be about the decorations? Or about the photos?
Seriously, decide what your intent is in scrapbooking, and then follow that... I have seena lot of pages (winning contests etc) where the decorations completely overwhelmed the photo. For me, it's abou tthe photos, so I don't do extravagent pages.
