New here, just need to vent a little!

I have been signed up and lurking for awhile, but this week just has me frustrated to no end. We had a baby back in November, and we have 2 kids already. Our two year old has Cystic Fibrosis.

Anyway, today we got a call from a company that we got a piece of medical equipment for her from, They are saying we owe then over $5,000!! We got a grant for $5,000, but that didn't cover the whole expense. The company told us, no problem, we will put it on a rental agreement and go back through insurance to get monthly rental payments. 8-9 months go by, and we never heard from them, so we thought it all worked out. Now they are saying that the insurance wouldn't do a rental agreement and only paid them $2,500, so we owe the rest. This comes after a call I got earlier this week from one of the Dr's that helped in my delivery (well, her office anyway) telling me that we had to work out some payment plan preferably before Christmas. That has a long, complicated story behind it, but basically what ticks me off is that one of the Dr's screwed up and I'm getting billed for the procedure he messed up, plus the procedure I had to have to try and fix what he did! Jeeze, nothing like screwing up a procedure so you can get more money out of a patient! Needless to say, I'm going to contest that bill.

I just feel like we can't ever win. I mean, my 2 yo has a terminal illness for goodness sake, and I hate that I feel like I have to determine what treatment, equipment, medicine, etc by how much I can afford to pay! We tried to get SSI for her, but they said we had too many assets, which is a total joke. We make just above the limit on most programs. It sucks to know that no one cares if your kid lives or dies, as long as they get paid.

Thanks for letting me get this all out.

That stinks. Hire a lawyer, have them write some fancy letters on some fancy letterhead and see if any of these problems go away. Just an idea.

Thanks for the replies. It is just so hard that this hit all at once, right before Christmas. We haven't even been Christmas shopping yet because DH was waiting to see if he would get a bonus from his work. So we have the tree and decorations up, no presents under it, and people are calling demanding money. I started bawling before I even got off the phone with the medical equipment lady. My 6yo asked me if I was crying because we couldn't afford something. I mean, dang, how bad is that that she already knows about not being able to afford things? Then I made them grilled cheese for lunch and she finished her sandwich and said, "Mom, that's okay, you don't have to make me another one." The bad thing was, I just happened to have used the last of the bread or I would have made her another one. I don't want her to get it in her head that we can't afford to feed her! Luckily, DH did get a bonus, so we are going Christmas shopping tomorrow. We've never overly spoiled the kids on Christmas or their birthdays, so hopefully it shouldn't seem any different to them this year. I was wanting to make a couple of things I saw on the crafting forum for them, but I asked my mom about using her sewing mahine and she said it's messed up, so there went that idea. :

Medical bills really suck. We've been there this past year as well. It can get so hard to slog through.

On the SSI, I've heard from a number of people that they deny the first application (or three) just on general principle, because it cuts down on what they have to pay out if people give up. You have to keep reapplying and appealing to have any hope of getting benefits paid. It would be worth trying again.

I'm sorry it seems everything is happening at once. I'm having my own unexpected medical bill drama and it's not enjoyable. It's too bad you can't trust your Dr to not create more trouble than necessary...but contest everything and don't budge an inch!

I'm glad you can go Christmas shopping after all!
