Small kids....

My oldest has ALWAYS been on the small side. Now he's 8 years old and very thin, and quite short as well. I'm not sure of his exact height, but I know he's not quite 50 pounds yet. I've taken him to the ped's office and the doc assured me that he's still on the growth chart, and not to worry but I can't help it.... People are always commenting on how TINY he is, and it really gets under my skin. Add to that the fact that he's a picky eater, and I am basically always wondering and worrying about his food intake and size.

Sigh.

Are there any other moms to wiry little kids out there??

Ds2 is super small. He's 11 (almost 12, actually . I don't know what he weights, but not much. Ds3 is sorta small. He's 6. He seems to be catching up with the others in his class. And dd is MICRO! She is 3 and weighs in at a whopping 25.8 lbs.

Ds1 is almost 5. I think he is still about 34-35 lbs and not very tall. He is in a 4 year old preschool class and a lot of the kids are just nearly a year younger than him. He is taller than a couple of them, but mostly shorter than everyone. It worries my dh a lot, but I found out from dh's grandfather that he was very small when he was little. He had a huge growth spurt around 12 years old, I think, and is now 6'4". I used to keep hoping for an obivious growth spurt for ds1, but who knows, maybe he'll be small for a long time. He is somewhat picky-eats more fruits and vegetables than proteins, but I wouldn't say his diet has anything to do with his size. He also rarely sits still and gets a lot of exercise.

So, anyway, I have an almost 5 year old that wears 4T clothes and a 2 year and three month old that already wears 3T pajamas. They are just different kids.

Both my DD's are on the smaller side. DD1 will be 5 in a couple weeks and weighs 33 lbs, a huge jump from when she was almost 4y and weighed 25. DD2 is still larger then DD1 was at her age, she is 14 months and 19lbs, but she is rapidly losing what little "fat" she had.

We have a mix of genetics, DH's family is on the smaller side, he is one of the tallest and he is 5'10, I'm the smallest in my family at 5'5, everyone else is over 6 ft or close to it. Add to the fact that I am barely over 100 lbs, and I know where my girls get it from. It would be nice for them to weight a little more, finding clothes that are slim enough is always a challenge, and I know from experience that it never gets easier, darn that vanity sizing. :

One of my twin boys is tiny, but super strong. He's in about the 20-25 percentile for height and weight. He takes after my dh, who's only 5'10" and was always the shortest in class until college. My other twin takes after the men in my family who are 6'2"-6'4". He's one of the taller kids, but still lean. My tall twin was much smaller than his brother at birth, but quickly caught up.

The boys' ped took my concerns about the small twins growth seriously. By a year, he was already more than 1 inch difference... Now at 5.5, it's 2 1/2 inches difference. We monitored him for a while, but he's just on a growth curve of his own. He'll probably be 3-4 inches shorter than his twin. It's just who he is. Sounds like your son is on his own curve as well.

Tirza is 9 & 50lbs.

Asha is 6 & just over 40lbs, probably around 43/44. She's built different than her sisters & she looks bigger than she is.

Nadia is 5 & actually hit 39lbs. She was 33 at her 5 years appt in April. She's packed weight on since starting school in September. She's always been my smallest. She was 6lbs 5oz at birth(42weeks) & was 16lbs at 1 year.

My nephew is quite small and so his parents ended up taking him to the endocrinologist to see if there was something wrong with his growth. They are both petite people as well. The doc figured out that he would probably grow almost as tall as his dad and they could consider hormones if they wanted.

He also is a picky eater, but then they discovered his food allergies. They realized the stuff he was refusing was what he was allergic too.

Just some points to consider.

Both my kids are very all for their age. Their father and I are of average height. I feel that kids grow at different rates and it doesn't mean they will be short or tall adults. My grandma was the tallest kids in her 6'th grade class and only ended up being 5'1.
