Bigger bed?

Dh and I have always slept in a full size bed. Our dog frequently sleeps on our bed and is crowding us now. Without the dog (or dd) dh and I are comfortable in a full size bed.

Dd (7) sleeps in her own twin size bed. We aren't having any more children.

We are considering getting a different bed in the next year or two and giving dd our full size bed.

Would it be worth it to get a queen size bed or would that still be too crowded? I think we could fit a standard king size bed in our room. I'm not sure about getting it up the stairs.

Has anyone gotten a bigger bed and regretted it?

i'm not exactly the right person to answer this - i don't have a king-size bed & regret it. i have a queen-size bed and am happy with it. we cosleep with an infant and have plenty of room; our toddler joins us in the morning, which is a little more snug but still okay.

the reasons i didn't want a king-size bed were financial. not only is the bed itself more expensive, but the sheets and other bedding are also way more expensive than for a queen. a king-size bed would fit in our room, but a queen leaves more space.

also, don't know if you're into feng shui (i'm not, really) but a king-size bed is considered bad for couples since the box-spring is split down the middle.

just my ramblings! ignore, if you like!

That's interesting. I was thinking before I posted that we should study up on feng shui or get crystals or something because maybe something isn't right in our house energy.

According to this our bedroom goes against most feng shui recommendations.

We've had a queen bed for the entire 8 years we've been together but with the addition of DS (co-sleeping), it's just too darn crowded. We just bought a new bed (hasn't been delivered yet...can't wait!!!). It's a king, 100% latex (so very limited chemicals), one piece (no box spring). It will barely fit in our bedroom but I don't care. The only time we're in there is when we're in bed or quickly getting dressed. We shopped around and got an awesome deal on a returned item ($1k for a $2500 mattress) at a local small business.

I loooooooooooooove my king sized bed. My husband and I slept in a full at first, then a queen with our first daughter, and we got a king for our second daughter. There is room for all of us and I LOVE IT.

A note on getting it up the stairs... we got a foam mattress from Ikea (it was like $300 for a king), it is VERY comfortable and it comes rolled up and wrapped, so it wasn't an issue getting it up our narrow stairwell.

Our sleeping habits changed when we went from a queen to a king. We used to cuddle while we slept. Now you could fit several people between us in the bed, and we don't really touch each other while we sleep anymore.

It is also hard to sleep in a queen size bed on vacation or at someone else's house, because we're so used to having so much personal space at home. Especially when we added a co-sleeping baby to the mix. But I still like the feeling of a big bed.

We got a kind-sized bed for exactly the same reason...dogs were crowding us...and now we never snuggle. I miss that.

We could both scoot toward the middle and snuggle, but then neither of us could reach our alarm clocks to hit the snooze button.

We like to snuggle. I would not want to lose that. It's especially nice in winter. :

redhen- Did you get that mattress at an Ikea store or online? There aren't any Ikea stores near us. What kind of base did you put it on?

We picked it up at the store. I know you can order some items online, but their shipping is outrageous. It is still just sitting on the floor, but my husband is supposed to be building a slatted base for it.

We went from a queen to a king a few years ago as a result of my husband's back problems. Our crunchy chiropractor recommended a larger bed because of our heights. Hubs is 6'3" and I am almost 5'10" and somehow the two 10 pound cats seem to take up more than their fare share of room.

For us, it really did make an enjoyable sleeping difference. Now that our son is with us, a king is just right.

Retail, king bedding is more expensive but on sale or clearance, you can find very reasonable sheet sets.

Thanks everyone.
I think dh and I have decided that a king is probably too big for us unless we get more bed hogging pets.

Kim, we still sleep on a full too, along with a dog and a three year old. =) Unfortunately our tiny bedroom doesn't have space for a queen, but I would totally recommend getting one if you can afford it! If you're giving dd the full, you'll need a new mattress anyway, and a queen is usually just a tiny bit more expensive than a full. But keep in mind, you'll need new sheets too. Comforters for a full are generally about the same as for a queen, so you might be able to skip that.

It sounds like you've already decided against a king, but just to give you an idea, a full is 53x74", a queen is 60x80", and a king is 76x80". Basically a queen will give you just a little extra space, which should be perfect for the pooch. In a king (unless you have lots of kids or are just used to it) you'll feel like you're swimming! It's almost a square, when you look at it. And I think people who are accustomed to sleeping close together don't adjust well to the Grand Canyon feel. =)

And as for the feng shui stuff, I'd totally give it a go! I'm no expert, but I am Asian so mom has always lectured me about this stuff. I've heard most of the stuff in that link before, but the crucial thing in my fam is the headboard, the spacing on the sides, and the no-tv/pictures aspect. We actually do have plants in the corners too!

Good luck with everything!

Just thought I'd mention that some houses will let you get a king into the bedroom more easily than a queen. The king box spring is two pieces, so each is smaller than the queen, and mattresses bend. My brother couldn't get a queen up his stairs, but a king was no problem. I'd do some measuring before ordering!

I would love, love, love a kind sized bed. I love staying at my moms and sleeping in hers!

DH and I started out on a full-sized bed, which was perfect for us until we had our daughter. We used it for the first little while with her, and were then handed down a queen sized bed. We'd probably still have it, but my inlaws are indecisive and bought a King sized bed and mattress set, and then decided they wanted one of those space aged foam mattresses instead. So we got their "old" (maybe 6 month old) set.

The King is big, for sure. If I lay in the middle and reach out, I don't even come close to touching the edges. We usually find ourselves snuggled together on DH's side of the bed by morning, and our 2 year old is sprawled out and hogging my side of the bed, completely.

One thing we did notice, was that moving the King sized bed was MUCH easier than moving the Queen, when we left our last house. As somebody above mentioned, this is because the box spring for the queen is solid and very large. The King's boxspring is essentially two twin sized pieces. And of course, the mattress itself is very flexible. We had to bring both down a flight of stairs, and we seriously considered cutting up the Queen's boxspring, it was such a pain to maneuver. :P Moving the King was a breeze.

we have a queen pushed next to a twin. together they form a giant voltron bed. when (if) casi moves to his own room, he'll take the twin with him. if you're the type of person who likes to have a nice, matched bedroom set, this probably won't work for you unless you buy all the same bedding (or at least the same color). otherwise, it has worked great for us, especially with cosleeping.

I never thought about the king foundation being 2 smaller parts and thus being easier to move. That's a really good point. Although we are considering going with a bed without a boxspring now.

Well DH and I can not afford a new bed right now, so we are using the two twin sized beds that he and his brother had when they were teenagers. We stuck them together, added some king sized bedding and viola! I know, techincally they are different beds, and techincally I sleep in my BIL's bed every night () but until we can afford a bed, this is working for us.

When we do finally buy one, it will most likely be a queen because the king is huge, even for DH and I, and we are both plus sized.
