Do you let your kids eat snow?

My 3.5 yo dd LOVES to eat snow. We live in Nova Scotia and just had the most beautiful snowfall. She is usually a pretty good listener, but not with this. She absolutely loves to eat it. I know to be careful in areas that could be contaminated with road salt, dog pee, etc, but what about seemingly fresh, new snow? Acid rain? Should I pick this battle?

I tell my daughter to please not eat dirty snow. I don't see what the deal is with fresh snow.

I let my kids eat it on ocassion from the backyard or the park, well away from the road, etc. We have even gotten a bowl of snow now and then and eaten it with a tiny amount of sugar or maple syrup like in the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. The kids love that. I know it probably isn't the healthiest thing in the world, but I figure it's a really small amount.

I wouldn't but then again I don't live in the snow. We visit my parents a few times during the winter when there is snow at their house and I don't care if my kids eat the snow...it actually had never even crossed my mind to object. Of course, I always tease them about not eating the yellow snow....

I wouldn't know how to stop her, short of putting a space helmet on her. I do try to make sure its at least clean-looking snow!

They eat snow. DH and the kids even made snow ice cream that last two nights

#2 will eat snow if he is near it, there is no stopping him. I'd rather he didn't, but he won't stop.

I say let her eat it! I like it. Haven't you ever tried it.
We make snow ice cream too.

*I* eat snow. Of course my dd does.

Her favorite xmas song is a parody of "Let it Snow" called "Yellow Snow," so she knows not to eat the dirty stuff.

Living and having grown up in the Houston area I never knew that kids liked to eat snow so much. I learned something new today.

If they don't eat any, we'll never get rid of the 5 feet snowbanks in our yard!:

I couldn't stop DD if I tried. I just point her to clean-looking snow.

She's also addicted to picking ice off of tree branches and such and sucking on it. The recent ice storms made that one almost impossible to stop. :

Get a dog. I had two big snow eaters until we got our dog and they saw what the dogs did in the snow and how, sometimes, the next day, if you look in the same spot, it's covered up with new snow, but still there. Eating snow while it's falling, though? No problem. They're not gonna eat enough to get sick.

There is no way in heck I could stop my DD's from eating snow. I try to stear them towards fresher looking snow in the front yard, away from where the dog does his business.

Thanks, mamas! I think I'll lighten up now. I can't always trust myself on this stuff 'cause I'm WAY too protective (some say paranoid). Snow it is, then. BTW, we DO have a dog. Doesn't stop my snow monster, although at least she really gets the yellow-snow thing. Like the maple syrup idea, too, especially living in Nova Scotia! She'll LOVE it.

I tell her that she can only eat the snow that is falling directly from the sky, and the snow that is in our back yard. Otherwise, it's likely very dirty.

She tells me that the snow that she catches on her tongue tastes like pizza :

I don't mind her eating snow at all. I will do it too! All we say is to not eat yellow snow

What is the fascination? My son loves it too. Shoves huge mouthfuls in his face every chance he gets.

Sure, just not obviously dirty snow.
