Do you let your kids eat snow? - Page 3

We put tupperware out before a snowfall...that way the snow is mroe likely to be clean and i can try to get dd1 her fill before she eats the snow off the steps "But it's not yellow, Mommy!"

I saw this thread title and thought, "Well, sure, I let ds eat snow, but that's 'cause we live in Nova Scotia. It's as clean as snow gets."

We make both snowcream and "snowgeritas" with limeade and lllloooottts of Tequila. I have rules though, it has to be fresh snow, but not the first snow fall in a while. Someone told me when I was a kid that the clouds hold a lot of pollutants that come out with the first rain or snow fall. Sooo, if it has been snowing for at least a day, I consider the yucky snow to be purged and all other subsequent snow to be pure. Not a problem here, as it snows every. freaking. day. all. winter. and. spring. until. May.

I discourage it because eating snow makes you really cold, and I want the kids to stay outside as long as possible! But there's no real way to stop them, other than making them come in, and if I've managed to get them all bundled up and playing outside, I'm not bringing them in for eating a little snow.

Hey, green betty, we're in Nova Scotia, too. Nice to know the snow is clean here. But does the water that makes the snow COME from Nova Scotia?? If it comes from the harbour, i dunno..:

Beautiful snow, though, especially lately; though here comes the rain again. No wonder she likes to eat it. My kid really likes to be cold, too..NOT like her mother! She says the snow "cools her down."

Yeah, I think this is true. Pretty much snowflakes & rain drops form around some piece of dirt/pollution/whatever that's in the atmosphere, right?

BUT--although it yucks me out, I know I ate a ton of snow as a kid and there is no way I would be able to stop dd unless I kept her inside all winter. In fact, it's the first thing she taught her brothers this season. "Come on boys! There's snow to EAT!!!"

What really grosses me out is eating icycles. Frozen drainage from the roof, with a side of shingle. Yum!?

Well, it's probably as clean as fresh rain, right? So, not very. But A) like the other moms here, I can't begin to control it; and B) it sure looks clean!

Honestly, I figure it's marginal risk, especially if he generally drinks high-quality water. I'm waaaay too busy with the important battles to pick this one.

If you're ever down Lunenburg way, drop me a line! The south shore MDC mamas are talking about a come one, come all barbeque this summer...

Every time it snows!! Stick a bowl out let it fill, ad vanilla, cream or milk (sometimes both depending on what I have) ummmmmmmmmyyyyyyyy snow ice cream.

As long as it's not yellow.

Seriously though, I wish we would just get some snow. Just one little snowfall would be nice.

We used to make snow cream when we were kids too and it was sooo good. It never snows anymore.

Green Betty...Is there a South Shore Mamas' tribe thread or anything? We're in Halifax and do not have a car; but do, ahem, borrow one once in a while. I'd love to meet some other MDC moms IRL; I'm sure there are others in Halifax, but I LOVE the Lunenberg area and the trip would be fun. I'll drop you a line when the weather warms up to see when it might be (seems like so far from now, but I know it will come so fast). Thanks!
