Cleaning my garbage disposal?

My garbage disposal is getting a little bit of an odor -- I rarely use it and have tried using ice cubes and dish detergent but the odor remains.

Someone told me lemon juice is very bad and can rust out the metal or something.

What can I use to get rid of the smell?

Thanks!

When we had one, I'd dump the box of baking soda that I kept in the fridge (after 3 months or so, when it needed to be changed) in it and leave it there over night

Baking soda and vinegar.

Our first disposal manual recommended ice cubes sprinkled with a bit of comet cleanser. I ran this without water for a few seconds and let the rest melt away.

I suppose you could use baking soda in place of the comet.

I put citrus peels in every chance I get.
