Great nurse at the peds office

DS has RSV...ick! So now I have to use a nebulizer to give him breathing treatments at home. Anyway, yesterday in the peds office we did his first breathing treatment and the nurse was there to help me and show me what to do.

He was really fighting it and she said that some crying is okay because we definitely want the meds to get down into his lungs, but he was getting frantic, kwim...

So...she asked if I was breastfeeding and I said yes, but with an SNS and sometimes I pump and bottlefeed and she said, why don't you unbutton your shirt and let him lie skin-to-skin. That may calm him down for his breathing treatment.

I did and it worked!! I told her that when I bottle feed him I do the same thing (skin to skin) and she gave me the .

She said nothing is better for a babe than the feel and smell of his mama!

It's great to hear when people actually get good advice from medical professionals. Such a relief!

Hope your little one is feeling better soon.

What a wise nurse.

Our sense of smell is very powerful. One of the ways we helped DS make the transition to his own room was to lend him either my pillow (which I would reclaim when I went to bed) or a blanket of mine.

Sorry your baby is sick

I do have to say, HUGE WOW to that nurse! In my line of work I deal with so so sooooooo many health care professionals that are impatient and uneducated when it comes to a breastfed child. It happens so much that when I hear of a nurse like yours, I want to send her a thank you card and flowers.

I wish everyone knew the important of skin-to-skin. Not just if they're sick, but all the time...and not just when they are breastfeeding, but even if they are bottlefeeding. That feeding time with mama is so important. It's something I feel very passionately about.

Breastfeed WHILE doing the treatment! It is the BEST way to do it!! Just latch baby on, then point the nebulizer spout right at his nose (Obviously, babies have to breathe through their nose while nursing). Baby gets milk and medicine at the same time, and is generally completely happy to do so.......That's how my dd got all her bretahing treatments until she weaned!
