My dh did all of the research on the cast-iron for our house and he really likes the Lodge because it's made in the USA. He says most of the other brands are MIC. He also likes the seasoned Pro-Logic and yes they are more expensive, but I got him 2 frying pans, a 5 qt dutch oven (w/o feet) and I reversible 2 burner griddle for Christmas for $108 from Linens and Things - the lady at the register was sooo nice - she put a 20% off coupon code in the register and I didn't even have one. My mother said that they were cheaper than the ones she saw at WalMart, but idk if that's true.

Also check out yard sales and flea markets... you can get really old cast iron pans for a few bucks a piece. Even if there's a little rust, you can clean it off, reseason the pan and you're good to go!
I have one pan that I bought new/unseasoned and one from my grandmother. The old one shows signs of rust and wear, but it cooks great.
And lodgemfg.com shows and sells their whole line of products.

Also, there is no way I can afford (and I can't find one at thrift stores either) a stainless soup pot. Can I get a 7 quart cast iron and use it for soup and pasta and stuff?
I got a giant (like 15 inch!) lodge skillet for my bday! Dh rocks, he really does listen sometimes! Anywho, the seasoning was great when I got it, and a month later now it is almost perfect. I can even get eggs to flip nicely w/o broken yolks. He got it at an outlet store. but it was still pricey. However, if you have TJ Maxx by you, they have them there quite often, and they still offer 30 day layaway at most stores. They also have le cruest.

It was a cast iron christmas for me! I got that skillet, a rachel ray psuedo-le cruest enameled casserole, and a big ol' dutch oven! Not shabby.

Oh, yea, Kmart has a set of skillets for like $25 if you don't mind MIC. Or try a gander mountain or other type of camping store.

I wouldn't recommend boiling water in a cast iron, unless you want rust central. Keep an eye at Ollies, Value City, or Big Lots. Before xmas, value city was selling a 3 pot set of ss stock pots (the biggest was HUGE) for $20.

hth!

Also wanted to add, ask your older relatives! They probably have some lying around they aren't using. I just had a 20 minute convo w/ mil xmas eve about the pan she "just can't get seasoned" that "keeps shedding metal" that "just can't be good for you" I asked her if she was using bacon grease or lard to season it because you can't use veg oil, but she dodged the question, which means Yes, she was using olive oil. Anyway, I convinced the queen of tossing things to give it to me. And she didn't even seem to register that iron is the one metal it's okay to ingest... Gods love her...

Anyone use cast iron muffin pans?

I've been longing for a muffin pan without teflon and love cast iron for everything else anyway!

silly question

I just got a martha stuart brand pre-seasoned cast iron skillet, so thrilled! So my question is how do i start cooking with it? Do I just give it a rinse and then start cooking with it? i guess so, is this a silly question or what? i just dont want to ruin it.

yep, that's about it. And buy a nice stiff wire brush at the store to clean it up! Happy cooking!

so what would a vegetarian use? I'm looking for my first cast iron and seasoning it is a big concern.

Oooh, I don't know. Maybe you need to invest in preseasoned, but if it needs reseasoned, I don't know what to tell you! All the directions I saw said lard or bacon fat/grease only!

I'm vegetarian, and I'm going to try to use cocount oil.
I'm pretty sure vegetable oil works just fine... I know thats what we've always used....

I'm veg too. I bought the preseasoned andhave only been using it for a week or so, but I spray it with canola oil. I don't see why veg. oil wouldn't work... that is what they use on the preseasoned.
