baby (lack of) poop talk

she's wetting a diaper every time she eats- but I only see one poopy diaper every 2 days or so. is this normal? aren't NB's supposed to poop every time they eat? All my other kids did. I know BF babies CAN go days without pooping but i didn't think it could happen this young, my other kids were 2-4 mos old when that started.

she nurses every 2-5 hours and rarely cries, doesn't grunt or strain to poo either. poo is normal BF color/consistency.

so just tell me it's OK- there's really no other reason to believe it's not.

so hard to look for info but found you a link

oh here u go from this link - http://www.umc-cares.org/health_info...&ArticleID=166

"Even if a baby is strictly breast-fed, the frequency of stooling varies among infants. While a frequent stool is most common, babies may stool only one time every other day and still be completely normal. Constipation in fact refers not only to the frequency of stools, but also to the consistency. Therefore, if an infant poops every third day but it comes out soft, this would not be considered constipation, and no therapy is indicated. In fact, at 3-6 weeks of age, breast-fed babies may only have one stool a week. This is because breast milk leaves very little waste in the intestines to be passed. Again, if the stool, when passed, is not hard, this is completely normal. In general, it is almost impossible for strictly breast-fed babies to become constipated."

she's 3 wks so it sounds like all's well

I know you want folks to tell you not to worry, but personally it would worry me if I wasn't seeing poop nearly every time I changed Olivia's diaper ...

From birth pretty much, A-L was a once-every-two-weeks pooper. It freaked me out a bit at first, but the doctor's assured me that if she wasn't acting constipated and her stools were otherwise normal (they were, just in copious amounts) there was no reason to worry. This baby has 2-3 poopy diapers a day, on the other hand. It just varies from baby to baby I think. At 3 weeks old, I definitely wouldn't worry.

My babies have varied from once or twice a week to several times a day. Every one has been different. Usually if they skipped days in between they just had big blowouts instead of lots of little tiny squirts.

my DD used to just poop once or twice a week. of course when she did poop it was pretty explosive. but sometimes it wasn't, and one or two big poops a week was actually kinda nice.

DD was a once a weeker, I was told BF babes have less waste, most of the nutrition gets used, unlike formula babes. Don't worry, unless she cries like she's in pain for no obvious reason or her stomach starts feeling hard and like an accordian cause the intestines are getting backed up.

thanks- there seems to be no other evidence of problems, her belly is soft & she's happy. thanks for looking that up, 3-6 weeks surprises me. In a good way.

another post of reassurance...my first 2 were constant poopers, but ds2 went to a 14 day schedule as soon as the meconium cleared out. Freaked us out big time, but gosh, it sure did make laundry nice up until he started on solid foods at 10 months! Imagine, only 2 poopy diapers a month for 10 months!

He sure would get grumpy toward the end of those 2 weeks, though! We could always tell he was working on it! FTR, he is very regular now--once a day, or twice every other day, generally.

As luck would have it, she's completely filled 3-4 poopy diapers since i posted that (yesterday AM?)

should i jinx myself by commenting that none leaked through.

i wouldn't mind a 14 day poop schedule at ALL- as long as she's healthy and there's no blockage or anything.
