Pre-seasoned cast iron

Should I buy pre-seasoned cast iron? Is there anything dangerous about it?
OMG I hope not! I asked for three Lodge pans for Christmas

Nothing dangerous that I'm aware of... but if there's a price difference between preseasoned and not, I'd go with the cheaper, since you still need to season it yourself, even if it is preseasoned.

Actually it is cheaper because it is elligible for free shipping. I really don't want to buy anything new, but I can't find any at thrift stores and I can't stand using my toxic pots anymore.

Nothing wrong with it that I know if - tis just easier to work with initially You'll still have to season it occasionally, but can use it right out of the box Lodge pre-seasoned stuff rocks!

Cook's Illustrated just did a review of cast iron pans and they recommend preseasoned Lodge pans.

I have some of these, and I love them. Amazon sells lots of the Lodge, both pre-seasoned and the regular, and often you can find really great prices there, plus the free shipping.

I have some not pre-seasoned, and some pre-seasoned. I would advise that you get the pre-seasoned ones. They are a lot easier to use. The company just does the pre-seasoning for you. They don't use anything bad on them, and I figure they can probably do a better job (hotter ovens and all) than I could do. (Plus I don't have to stink up my kitchen doing them myself.)

awesome I am so excited!! I bought two bare no-name pans about a year ago and tried to season them myself, and it was a nightmare. I'm sure it was user error but I'm going with the good stuff from now on!

I found all of my cast iron at antique stores. You can get them for cheap, and they are already pre-seasoned to boot. I love them!

I wish. I have been looking for months and NEVER find any.

I just got my first cast iron, a Lodge preseasoned, and have used it once so far, it seems really nice!

I actually wrote the Lodge company about their seasoning process, and they said they use vegetable shortening on the pans, in a high temp oven to cure it, twice. So, basically what your would do at home, only they do it for you, and your house doesn't stink

I'm sure it's perfectly safe. All of my cast-iron Lodge is pre-seasoned, and I love it.
