The one that I received just seemed to have some outdated advice. For example the poop thing. They don't really talk much about BFing an older infant (beyond a few months old) and the normal changes that may occur in a BF infant and mother. They never mention that beyond 6 weeks BF babies stools may occur way less frequently (like every 7-10 days like my DD's did). And that your breasts may not always get engorged like they did in the early weeks...and that is normal. It's the body adjusting, not mama running out of milk.

These are 2 biggies that new mamas may not know about. All of a sudden they are not becoming engorged any more and their 2 month old baby is only pooping every few days instead of several times a day like the book says. She must be "running out of milk"...better drag out the can that she got from the hospital "just in case". And the cycle begins...

I found the book okay, but really just pretty basic.

Thanks . I took the bags, but never read the booklets.

The Nursing Mother's Companion excerpts that comprised the booklet I got were aimed at the 0-3 month age range. It was not the complete book at all. It was a great aid for me getting started and I don't think it had any detrimental advice in it. And it led me to buy the book, which had more good advice.

Anyone read the Nursing Mother's Companion and had problems with the advice in it? New edition, not an old one. Just wondering. It seemed like an excellent resource to me, but I don't want to be recommending it to others if it isn't.

This is not a direct quote, but it may say something like , while breast is best, if you are not sure baby is getting enough, the next best thing is <insert formula brand>. If they truly wanted a mom to be helped, it would say something like : if you are not sure baby is getting enough, look at babies output and compare it to this chart <insert true and accurate output chart here> contact an IBCLC at your local hospital or at ilca.org. According to guidelines, breastmilk is best, if not from the breast, expressed mothers milk is the next best thing, if this is not an option, banked donor milk is reccomended. Contact your pediatrician for an evaluation and information on banked donor milk, if none of these are options ask your pediatrician for advice on an appropriate breastmilk substitute.

I've only skimmed it, but I got it as a present for my friend and her now 7 month-old. I wanted something that was accessible, had good info, wasn't preachy, and really addressed pumping and WOH. I had the Womanly Art when I was nursing my first and it was completely useless to me since it addressed none of my problems and Jack Newman just rubs me the wrong way. My friend told me it defiitely helped her a great deal - went so far as to say it saved her a few times since she was able to read that what was happening at X weeks was normal and get some good info on how to cope with it and it helped her diagnose the pain she was having as thrush.
