Tell me I don't need a Dyson vaccuum

I want a Dyson. My current vaccuum weighs a ton and no longer stays upright when you left go of the handle (it hit DS in the head the other day by accident). I'd like something lighter, great suction, QUIETER (my ears ring after vaccuuming), and a small voice in the back of my head is whispering "Dyson". But those suckers (haha, get it SUCKERS?) are like $400.

see if you can test drive a newer model. ours is older, love it, love it. but quite and light are not two words I would use to describe it... course I have a canister, the uprights may be lighter....
the 014 models are easier to use the attachments.
they do really suck up the dirt tho.

Save up and get a Miele, they're quite light and on the quiet side for a vacuum. Or, even better, a Roomba! That's what I am lusting after! :-)

I don't like bagless, personally.

The Roomba? You mean the robot one? We had one and it didn't work. Chased us all around, etc, but sucked at picking up dirt. We gave it back to MIL and got the $200 from her.

for allergies or asthma the roomba is not good. bagless is also better for allergies.

I was shopping for a new vac last year and checked out consumer reports at the library. Turns out there was another vac for a fraction of the cost, but that tested 60% better than the dyson, so I went with that. I think it was in the $140-$180 range at Walmart (which I never shop at, but they didn't have it other places I searched). It's an Eureka TheBoss Smartvac.

I checked...and if that one is really good they sell it brand new on ebay for 119$ much much cheaper then a dyson! I can only dream I am currently sweeping up aftern my messy household and not the budget for a new broom

I've used both a DYson and my Bissel. Both worked equally well. Both are lightweight. Both allergy friendly. The Bissel was about $160 new. I truly felt the Dyson was a lot of hype without the oooh and aaaah factor.

I longed for a Dyson but realistically, we have one carpet and it would not of been worth it. Inexpensive vacuums have served us well for as little as we need it.

Not to encourage you but Overstock sells refurb dysons cheaper than $400. Ours was about $300. I got it mainly because I was needing something that would do well on carpet and hardwood floor and tile. I am a cleaning nut. The Dyson is great, but not greater than the other vacuum I owned and loved...which was a Eureka/Sanitaire that I bought for $150. It was a great vacuum, but it was carpet only so when we moved here to the house with many floor types, after having a cheap Bissell die on us after a few months, I sprung for the Dyson. I am not unhappy with it. But I would NOT enthusiastically guarantee it is worth the extra money. Still, I have only had mine for a few months. I may feel differently in a few years if it does not break.

I was going to get a Miele, but I found the refurb Dyson and decided to save the money. The Mieles I was looking at were $400+ by a lot.

I love our Dyson, but I certainly wouldn't say that it's light, I have a hard time carrying it up the stairs. And it's not particularly quiet either.... but it works. But if those are your two main requests for a vacuum, I would pass on it.

I haven't checked recently but last time we were buying a vacuum Consumer Reports actually rated a Hoover model over the Dyson ones it tested.

That's true. Consumer Reports doesn't give Dysons a very good rating. It rates a lot of cheaper vacuums better than the Dyson.

You ladies rock! This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for!

I went to Sears and tired out a bunch of vacuums including the CR #1. I still liked the Dyson best and we bought it. It comes in on Friday. I can't wait. It had all of the features I wanted and handled so nice. It was nice to be able to use all the vacuums I was looking at to see how they worked. The sales guy knew all of the features on every one and took the time to show me. I got the o14 model but there is a new model out that is even nicer.

I have a Dyson, I got it several years ago. I wonder about these other vacuums-- do they lose suction / die soon? I had a cheap Eureka before the Dyson and it died after 1.5 years. 3.5 yrs later, my Dyson has had no problems.
Not that this is helpful to the OP....

I briefly considered a Dyson a year or two ago when we bought our last vacuum.

But my research led me to the Eureka Boss or whatever it is that Consumer Reports rated higher than the Dyson at a fraction of the cost. I got it on Ebay for $119, shipped, I believe.

It works great and I have no complaints.

I'm ready for a Dyson. Every vacuum I've purchased dies within 2 years and would cost as much to fix as to replace.

I would like a Miele... my mom had one and it was great.

I agree with the Overstock.com tip. I love my Dyson and honestly it's one item I definitely disagree with Consumer Reports on. I've had several vacuums, all different brands and Dyson beats them all hands down. Worth every penny IMO, even with tile and hardwood floors which is why I love it so much. The upholstery attachment is very hand, too. (Sorry OP I know that doesn't help!).

I bought a Dyson last year and love it. I looked through thread here and MDC and so many people were sooo in love with it!
I bought mine at Costco, and there was a $75 off coupon in their coupon book. It is the white one (specially made for Costco) and I got it for, I think, around $300.
It seemed expensive, but I will never need to buy bags, filters, or belts. It pys for itself pretty quickly.
I don't find it too heavy. You lift it by the middle handle,a nd so the center of gravity is good. It is a bit noisy but not nearly as loud as the Kirby, which is an absolute monster!
