DS is four and a half and still going strong. His personality is so developed now that he actually has a sense of humor about nursing. Sometimes he'll smile and say, "Gimmie dat bweast!" Or he'll catch me naked in the bathroom or something and just take a swipe at me like he's bobbing for boobies.

I'm not nursing a 4 yr old right now but I did nurse ds1 until he self weaned at 4 yrs 3.5 months- I also tandem nursed for 8 mos and am presently gearing up to begin tandem nursing again!

At my local LLL I seemed to be the "veteran" mom- I knew others who nursed as long but they rarely attend meetings anymore - I really should attend more often so others can see that tandem nursing does happen.

I have been tandem nursing my DS almost 4 and DD 19 Months. Every LLL Meeting I have attended and nursed both kiddos, I felt very uncomfortable!!!
Such a huge let down for me, as this is where I was introduced to Tandem Nursing and Child Led Weaning!!! I know there are 2 sides to the story and I am understanding of both, but still a bummer. Please know you are not alone even if you only have company vis the internet!!!

I'm also not nursing a 4 yr old atm, but I have nursed 3 4 yr olds, and I'm sure I will again. LOL

My ds was mutually weaned at 4, my dd weaned at one month shy of 5, and my ds weaned when the new baby came(so, he had a few drinks here and there afterwards, but he was pretty much done), which means he was about 4 months shy of turning 5. I am currently nursing my 3 yr old and my 4.5 months old. I have been nursing for just over 10 years consecutively, and tandeming for most of the last almost 9, including nursing 2 babes through my last pregnancy.

Nursing my kids has been the most amazing gift I have given them(and myself) so far!! I love nursing.

Dd#1 will be 4 in 4 weeks, I still nurse her 2-3 times a day. Luckily, we have a tandem nursing playgroup and friends who nursed their kids well into their 5th and 6th year. I guess it is easier when you have people IRL who nurse their kids. I must admit, it feels like we live in a bubble, all of my friends are going to LLL or belong to an AP playgroup or TN playgroup.

Just wanted to say that at around 4:00 today my daughter wanted to nurse (she'll be 4.5 on the 13th) and we both realized she hadn't nursed AT ALL since first waking up at around 7. This was her second night of not nursing (no tears, no drama, just very tired). I don't know if the change in our night pattern did it, but today was the longest that I can remember ever going without nursing her.

I still wish I knew more people nursing older kiddos.

I really don't know if I qualify. DD self weaned 1 mos before turning 4. She has expressed regret about her decision and latches on once or twice a week.There is no milk and she is OBSESSED with my breasts. Some on this site has said she is still nursing. I really don't know. It is sweet and amusing. And amazing. Keep it up girls.

*raises hand* Me too. DS turns 4 next week. Kind of hoping he'll wean soon though... I am finding it hard to tandum nurse with a 9 month old when I'm on my own.

Luckily my family and DH don't seem to mind either way. My sister "paved the way" with her 5 children, hers all self-weaned at different ages, but one was almost 5. I just don't mention it to the inlaws or my IRL friends!

I was nursing a four-year-old not long ago, but he seems to be a weaned 5-year-old now. I'm sure I'll be nursing a four-year-old again in a couple of years! It's probably not as rare as it seems. I can see how people tend to be quiet about it.

I told her big girls don't get nursey and she told me she'll stop when she's 20. (Well, I hope it happens before that.)

Tandem-nursing, too, with her little brother who is 28 months old.

We just don't ever talk about this with anyone IRL. I don't expect anyone to be able to understand, unfortunately.

It's funny I proudly tell people that dd and I nursed until she was almost 4. Her choice to stop although she still tries and wishes she hadn't stopped! Dh says I live in a bubble coz' all my friends nursed 2 yrs plus. But I like my bubble and I see with my own eyes the difference it makes. I tell dd that boobies are for feeding babies- I wonder what my mom told me they were for.....?

I was just thinking in our LLL group we're having a meeting exclusively for pre-schoolers and nursery (kindergarten + beyond) kids, and we have toddler meetings every month where this topic comes up all the time, you could ask your Leader for an 'exceptional' meeting if you wish, and they should schedule one in - just a thought ......

i nursed DS until he self weaned the week of his 5th birthday. he still likes to reach down my shirt and hold it when hes feeling stressed out or sad, now he is almost 6.5. I am just curious what it is like to nurse an 8 year old. other than in the movie "the last emporer", i dont think I have ever heard of a child nursing beyong 5 or 6. this is totally not a knock on your breastfeeding relationship with DC, as a formerly nursing mom of a school aged child i am honestly just very curious!
