S. Africa's legal protection for boys from circumcision

This might be old news on CAC. I'm sorry if it is. Just in case its not...

The Children's Act
went into effect July 1st 2007. Children under 16 are protected from being forcefully circumcised.

There is a fine line for this Act. Some tribe could justify it as a tradition. I do wish it was 'age 21' for the legal age to consent to a circumcision. A man at 21 is more likely to be mature and fully aware of choices than that of a 16 yr old.

At least this Act is a start.

I don't like the exception for tradition. That can mean anything. But at least it's a start.

No, the problem is that tradition can be read in so many ways. I know lots of familes from SA whose boys are circ'ed (recently too) because of "tradition", i.e. looking like dad, etc. And dare I say, that when you're paying for medical care, which all people who can afford it are, you can find someone who is happy to accept payment regardless of any act. But it is a step in the right direction at least.
