Friend of ours died last night :(

We got the news a few hours after he passed. It's all a bit of a shock. Seems he had a heart attack and they were going to do surgery but wanted him to be stronger. So he was sent home to build up strength where he instead had chest pains again. He died. Seems to have been a torn aorta.

His wife and kids are distraught. He was about 55 yrs old. Kids are 20 (ds) and 22 (dd), I think. He and his wife lost another ds when he was 8 mos old due to hospital error. He was given an adult dose of something. They never really got over that. (Do you ever, though?)

Anyway, we plan to give them a call later and go see them. It hasn't really sunk in yet for us.

Nothing to say, just sending hugs.

Thanks, Jess. We went to see the family tonight. They're ok. His granddaughter (his dd's baby) was wearing a onesie that read: Grandpa's Cutie. I choked up.

Making small talk is so weird in that situation. His dd and I got to talk breastfeeding and being moms, though. It kind of eased the tension.

Thanks.

The funeral was so surreal. It was beautifully done by another mutual friend of our families and there were parts that he got choked up. It was standing room only.

When we left, dh and I just cried and cried. We held it together most of the week and in front of the family.

Now I guess we just be supportive of the widow and the kids. When everything settles dh is going to make an effort to associate w/ the ds more often and we intend to take them all to lunch. Just be there more, I guess.

Somehow this is easier to deal with than my aunt's suicide earlier in the year (July). I saw our friend (Don) far more often in the 7 yrs we've known them than I'd seen my aunt in the last 15 yrs. Strange. I feel kind of disconnected somehow.
