Finally it came out! We have been waiting for this movie (document) to come out on VHS for over a year! Last year this movie came into movie theaters, but my DH and I missed it b/c they only played it in big cities.
So we thought we would wait few months for it to be released on VHS.......turned out to be over a year!! This year this movies has won an Oscar and was released into movie theaters again......3 days ago, it finally came out on VHS and we were able to see it.

Has anyone else seen it? It's a pretty strong coffee to take for some poeple I believe.
I absolutely "loved" it, as much as you can love truth about something, otherwise it was pretty scary. Where is USA going to?

Any thoughts on this movies?

Hi Pavlina,
I moved from Athens at the end of June, and dh and I went to see it at the Tate Center on campus sometime within the last year (can't remember when : ). It played there for three nights, and the night we went it was totally packed. You should keep your eye on the movie listings there, because they show some really good stuff, and if you're a non-student it's only ~$3. The listings are in the Flagpole.

Anyway, I also LOVED this documentary. I was estatic when MM got up on stage and said "Shame on you" to GW. I went out and rented all of "The Awful Truth" dvds. I pick up anything that has MM's name on it. I'm a big fan. I read Stupid White Men about two years ago; loved it, too. I'm glad he's becoming such a household name. I think he's one of our last chances in this country for getting heard.

I LOVE YOU, MICHAEL MOORE!

Erin

I was kind of annoyed that he was misleading with some of the information presented in the documentary. I don't really plan on seeing it since I found out he was not being entirely factual.

I haven't seen it bu my dh and I were talking about it the other day. He pissed me off! He mentioned that it was coming out on video soon and really wanted to see it. I told him some of the things I had heard and he sounded like a sheeple, "I love Michael Moore, I don't believe that stuff..." I sent him your link Mursing Mother, let's see what he says to that. I will watch it and like I do with everything else, research and find my own truth.

I don't know, a quick search on David T Hardy uncovers pages touting him as "The Gun Club's Best Friend" and a "2nd Amendment supporter". He obviously has an agenda.

Not that Michael Moore doesn't. . . I'm guessing the truth lies somewhere between the two.

That is the whole point - Micheal's opinion is that people SHOULD have the right to own a gun, but they NEED to stop killing each other and stop being so darn afraid of everything!!
That's what the whole movie was about! Canadian people have even more guns and they don't kill each other............

We saw it last night.

I recommend it. Sure it's Moore's view (what filmmaker or artist doesn't offer his or her own thesis? That's an important element of all art - argument.) but the issues he explores certainly affect us all whether we agree or disagree with him.

My husband talked about the film with our pediatrician this morning (16 month check up)when the doc issued a warning about kids and guns. One of the biggest risk factors for all kids - easy access to firearms.

i just saw it last night- i thought it was fantastic. moore brought together so many elements of u.s. culture that are not usually brought together. it was interesting how you can see him drawing his own conclusions for the preponderance of gun violence in the u.s. as the film went along- it wasn't like he started out with all of the answers..
regarding inconsistencies with the filming- i think one should see the movie before judging that issue. for instance, the charlton heston "from my cold dead hands" insert, imo, was not shown to be a part of the speech he made in denver after columbine. it was clear to me that the clip was placed there for emphasis.
overall, outstanding film. i wish i could show it in my classroom, but i'm a foreign language teacher so i don't think i could make a clear connection there.

hey Mariposa~ couldn't you show it for exposure to other culture's? Canada is a foreign country, isn't it?

Being from MI, I've been loving Michael Moore since "Roger & Me" & thought that Awful Truth was the best thing ever! Was so shocked they actually had it on TV! I didn't like his book so much tho, not as ROTFLMAO as Al Franken, I guess.

The thing I loved best about "Bowling for Columbine" was the interview with Marilyn Manson. It just so teaches you not to judge a book by it's cover! Wow.

oh Pavlina~

So true, but I think MFuglei was refering to David T Hardy's agenda, re: Gun Club' Best Friend, etc not Michael Moore. David T Hardy being the author of the link that Nursing Mother graced us with in her post.

BTW, as much as I generally do not flame folks: I am just shocked that people who *haven't seen* the movie would post to overtly or covertly criticize Michael Moore's POV & filmaking! Take it to activism why don't cha!

Other than that, I have "B4C" on my Netflix list bcz I really want to see it again, then I'll be more refreshed & ready to discuss!
blessings, Maria

spiralwoman ITA with your post. I also was impressed and honestly suprised with Marilyn Manson and how intelligent and truthful his points about fear and consumption were. My dh ha d this look of suprise on his face after the M. Manson part

I just saw it last night and found myself cringing, feeling truely embarrassed to be an American.

I wasn't criticizing his film making or his POV. I was criticizing him being less than factual in a documentary. I do admire him for creating such a moving film about such an important issue, a film that has affected so many and struck a cord with so many.

There are plenty of ugly hard scary facts about this issue and it wasn't necessary to be misleading about one detail when it cheapens his name and the rest of the film. It only gives those that disagree with him on the issue tools to attack it with.

I didn't look at the site NM provided, I have seen other information about this and as far as I have seen he was only misleading about the ease of gun purchases in Colorado POST-Columbine. Before Columbine took place it was as easy to purchase guns in Colorado as he described, with the new laws in place regarding background checks it is much more difficult.

If you read my previous posts in threads about gun law then you would realise this is a MAJOR sore point with me. I am very familiar with gun control laws and it bothers me that he was misleading about the ones in Colorado as it only gives gun lobbyists a reason to dismiss the film. I don't disagree with his POV at all.

I am sorry I wasn't more descriptive of my feelings towards this issue in my previous post but that is what annoyed me.

I have seen Marylin Manson in other interviews and I agree he is very eloquent.

Funniest part of BFC to me:

When MM was interviewing the two guys who knew one of the Columbine shooters-the guy in the video arcade who got suspended from school. MM asked him how long he got suspended and the kid said "360 days, or 180 days--however long the school year was." :LOL

MM is brilliant at getting people to reveal what idiots they are.

along that line how about the guy in Michigan who was # 2 on the threat list and he was pissed about that because he was not #1. I think he said something along the lines of how it would be good to be #1 for something in this town.

I LOVE MICHAEL MOORE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just watched BFC yesterday & I was completely moved to tears... I'm still grasping at how I feel about it. One minute I am sad & the next angry.

Dh and I were laughing at this part too :LOL

We just saw it last night so I am still letting it all sink in. Even if it isn't 100% factual, it is still a pretty scary!

One thing, I am Canadian and I have never seen bullets for sale at the Walmart! Of course I have never looked for them...:
