i just took inventory of the cd stash i've been building, and i think i may be a little lacking in some areas... experienced mommas tell me what you think. here's what i have so far. i want to use pfs and covers for the first few months, but have a feeling i'll like the fitteds for when the 2000 poops a day are over.

4 premie pfs (came free with a stash of infants)
31 infant pfs(did NOT know i had that many in there...)
12 small pfs

1 xs bumkins
2 nb prowraps
3 nb covers
(random brands)
1 nb fleece cover
2 sm g diapers
(do you think i could use these as covers? don't want to use the disposable part)

1 sm bum genius fleece
2 XS bum genius
1 sm bottombumper
(super cute owl embroidered on the butt )
1 xs fitted
1 sm cotton cover
4 sm covers
1 sm bumkins
1 sm prowrap

what else do i need?? snappis? more covers?

I know you want to use prefolds, but IME fitteds will be much less of a hassle for newborn poop. A good fitted will not allow the poop to run out of the diaper, onto the cover, down baby's leg, on your lap and all over your shirt, pants, carseat, grandma's arm, bassinet, blanket, etc.

I find that when I use prefolds on a newborn (I've cd all of my dc from birth) I end up changing diaper, cover, clothing and whatever surface the baby was touching at the time of explosion. A well fitting fitted will mean only changing the diaper and sometimes the cover if things get really messy, but rarely anything else.

Now, maybe some others are better at getting the prefolds nice and snug around baby's legs and waist, but this is my experience. I've built a stash of kissaluvs 0s and lots of covers and plan to use the prefolds as changing pads and burp clothes. Once baby is bigger and has more solid poop I'll use some of my prefolds in wrap style soakers.

I think you just need some snappis. We always seem to misplace ours, so I think 4 is a good number. You have plenty prefolds and covers. We used the infant prefolds for along time.

Personally, I prefer prefolds to fitteds for newborns because I can custom fit the prefold around their little legs. My babies are very skinny so fitteds always seemed to leak for us in the begining.

I was just telling DH he needs to go into our storage area and find our diaper stuff. I don't remember what we have. Al have always used prefold, and never had a messy problem, but I don't remember what kind of covers we liked best. The prowraps always seemed to work well with the prefolds. I might get some more small size diapers. My kids outgrew the nb size sooo fast. Now I want to see what I have that I liked. Let's see if I can get him to go dig them out for me!

yay! now i have a reason to get back on diaperswappers...

I think you need some fleece liners (IME, fleece or terry towelling loops are the best thing for poo containment. Think sea defences) and two packets of snappis. I realise this is probably too late to mention it, but I don't think there's a benefit to having both newborn and smalls- I prefer to go straight from newborn to mediums. Then again, I also go to birth-potty nappies at about the same stage.

I've never had a problem with newborn poop leaking from a properly-fitted prowrap. It looks good-- I'd just add snappis/pins and a pair or two of wool longies. That's the way to get fresh air to the buns. In fact, if ever you're concerned that a cover doesn't fit snugly enough, you can pull a pair of longies over and be confident that your sheets and everything else will remain safe.

Can you use infant-size prefolds on a newborn? Or do you need newborn-size prefolds?
Depends on the size of the buns. I know a lot of babies who have been fine in infant sizes from birth, but none of my kids were big enough for that at all.

I like fitteds for newborn poos, but I really consider it a luxury. I've only ever had 1-3 newborn fitteds. I find the fitteds save me from washing the covers quite so often, but I haven't had many poos that got out of the cover even with prefolds.

My babies have been on the smaller side so far (one was 6 lbs. 13 oz. at birth, the other was 6 lbs. 9 oz. at 3 days old, have no idea how much she weighed at birth), and I found infant-sized prefolds to be fine from the start. I do have some of the thinner Gerber birdseye type of prefolds, though, so I find that those have less bulk and are better to fit into the newborn covers. The thicker CPFs may not even fit into the smaller newborn covers.

Since you need to order snappis anyway you might want to order a set of pins or two in case you end up liking those better. I thought snappis were so-so and never had any pins but I wish I had some on hand to try when I couldn't get the fit I wanted with the snappi.

I think you look fine to start with...and you will be very happy you have 31 prefolds, trust me!!!

I never had too many leak problems with DS when we used only prefolds in the beginning (in fact we had more leaking with sposies LOL). The newborn proraps are awesome, and it looks like you have enough smalls as well. Unless you want to try more, I personally think you're looking good. Oh but I guess I would get snappis as mentioned above...though we didn't have any of those when we first started and everything was fine. We used cpf's and covers and that was it! Simple, quick, and effective.

That said....when we had DD we got a ton of kissluvs 0's and those are quite nice too! I do see you have a couple bumgenius which will be good for out and about...you may want a couple more, especially in the small size (or fuzzibunz or other aio/pocket type dipes bc they are much easier to deal with in a grocery store, for example.). Do you have a wet bag for the diaper bag? I'd look for one of those too!

Do I have enough CD for newborn??

So far my CD collection includes:

12x Pre-folds
12x Snappi countour Diapers
1x Organic Absorb-it-all fitted Diaper
1x Happy Hempy fitted
1x Snug-to-fit fitted
5x Snappis

3x Bummis Super Whisper Wrap
2x ProWrap covers
1x Wonder Wraps One-Size Diaper Cover
2 G-Diaper covers & liners

6x BumGenius

(+Pail/Liner/Wetbag)

What else do I need?? Thanks for help!

I think generally at least 24 diapers for newborns are a good idea, along with a good 5 covers since that newborn poo is runny and tends to make the covers need to be washed more often. I like to have a 3-5 easy dipes for going out, like bumgenius aio's or fuzzi bunz or something.

I think both your stashes sound great for starting out. I have heard of people using the g diaper covers over cloth so that's a bonus cover.

FYI, unless your baby is huge (like 12+ lbs) these will not work for a newborn. I foolishly got 3 dozen of these before dd was born thinking they were a great idea, but in actuality not so much! We started using them when she was 3 months old and they were huge! They really didn't start fitting well until she was around 15 lbs and with my little munchkin that meant like 9 months. Two tips: 1, grab a seam ripper and pull the flap soaker out. you probably won't need the extra absorbency in the beginning and it will cut down on the huge diaper butt affect. 2, try to tuck/roll the legs in to make the crotch a little narrower. I ended up ripping apart most of mine and using the parts to make other diapers, lol!

Thank you! I think I'll get 6 more infant prefolds and another small fitted too.

I was thinking the snug-to-fit was pretty big! It was a lovely gift from my swap partner (along with a prefold & the cutest flower print NB bummi's cover) It'll be perfect a few months down the line. So soft..
