Broken Toe?

I dropped a box of books on my foot while trying to get to the very last of my stored baby clothes. I think one or two of my toes is broken. Very swollen, cant stand on it, barely bend it, and its bruised.

The ER is the last place I want to go on earth.
I'm icing it, but the swelling is still pretty intense.

I dont know what to do, should I go in?
Do they heal on their own or do they need to be set?

Eek, that's the last thing you need now!!!

From what I've always understood, even if you can move it a little it is not broken. Maybe wait a bit and see if you can get more movement.

???
Hopefully someone will have better advice...

I can bend it a mm to two before sharp pain.
I'm just wondering if it would be any benefit at all to go in.

I mean, there isn't much they can do for me, is there?

kinda simplistic though

Yah, I think they would just make sure it is together properly, wrap it, and throw a prescription at you. I guess the main thing is to be sure the bones would be lined up properly. Hopefully it will get better pronto!

Yah ER will just xray it and confirm its broken.....take some pills and try and try not to squeeze it in tight shoes. Nothing really you can do for a broken toe. Unless its badly misformed it will heal on its own.

Yeah that's what I figured.

I guess I'll just wait it out for the day, I really can't have my toe touch anything without severe sharp pain, so its no fun.
But I dont think a brace would be fun either.

Well, if anyone has any other ideas - please let me know. I hate doctors.

no advice, but
That sucks massively. Do we have a cold compress smiley?

I'm not in your due date club, but I saw this in new posts. I broke my big toe last summer (ouch!) and I went to the doctor. They didn't do anything except x-ray to confirm it was broken, wrap it up and prescribe me some lortabs. The best advice is to stay off of it as much as you can. The other thing that the doctor had me do was use a wooden stick (she gave me some tongue depressors) to splint it. The basic idea is that you put the wooden part under the broken toe and then tape up the broken toe with a non-broken toe. Ideally, this way the non-broken toe takes the impact and the broken toe is shielded by the stick. It didn't work all that well, but it might be worth a shot. I didn't do very well with staying off it (big dog, no yard & no one else to walk the dog) and it still healed in less than a month. Good luck - I hope your toe feels better.

Sorry you're dealing with this!!

I broke my pinky toe in my second tri, a week before I was to leave for a week in Germany. All the doc did was buddy tape it - tape the broken toe to a non broken toe like the PP said - and gave me an ugly-ass shoe to wear. The shoe had a rigid sole that kept the toe from flexing. I managed to trudge all over Bavaria with that toe, with no pain killers and no taping, and it healed just fine. It was swollen and throbbing every night, but I could cram it back into sneakers the next day for more aimless wanderings.
