Ohio wic - just through the first year?? - Page 2

First, it *is* healthier for babies to be on formula for 2 years if they're not breastfed. Especially during the first half of the second year, when many babies aren't eating well yet.
I don't agree. I think "real" food - a variety of solids in as close to their natural state as possible- are way healthier for babies and toddlers who aren't breastfed, as soon as it's appropriate for them to eat solids. But I know that many would not agree with me. I think that the statement that babies should be on formula for 2 years is largely a formula company marketing tactic....if they had it their way, we'd all be on formula for life.

But I do think that breastfeeding moms should get any sort of incentive they can to support them to carry on breastfeeding past the first year of life.

just popped on to say that I was SO insulted at WIC that I only went ONE TIME!

Really, it was SOOOOO insulting.

My husband is an immigrant and this woman wouldn't even speak to him directly. SHe heard him speaking in English to me but was like "what is your dh's name? WHere is he from?"

then she tried to tell me that Soy was a dairy product.

Then I went to get dried beans that said "WIC approved" at the store, they were 1 penny more than what the coupon was for...and they wouldn't let me get them OR pay the penny. I learned later that they DO have to give them to you...but I never got that confirmed (my friend did, though, but I still don't understand the rule).

Was really, really bad.

I've never heard a formula ad for keeping a baby on it 2 years. I just think that it's reasonable, considering that breastmilk for 2 years is really the minimum. I wouldn't wean a bf baby before 2 years out of concern for their health, so why should a ff baby get adequate nutrition from plain cow's milk and solids?

9 cans is the max they give here in OH. I think they can give less or you can just not use all the vouchers. After I had to stop BFing (medical reasons) it was a lifesaver. They still gave me 9 when I was only supplementing, but they did come in handy as Milo got bigger. We had to buy 1 large can in addition to the WIC formula by the end of the first year.

In WV 9 is the max cans of formula you can get. I was told that even though I was still breastfeeding and just supplementing that they would go ahead and give me the full FF package. I didn't argue but it seems like a waste of resources to do that.

Also in WV moms get coupons for 6mo from birth, for 12 if BF'ng and kiddos get them for 5 years.

We have the farmer's market thing and are told to be sure to use all our vouchers or turn them back in so that funding doesn't get cut for the farmer's market program.
