So I finally have a few minutes to write my birth story. I had switched back to my CNM from my homebirth midwife due to financial reasons, so I had an NST and an ultrasound on Dec. 13th for my 41 week appt. The NST was fine, then I went to have the ultrasound. The U/S showed that I had no amniotic fluid and my placenta was very old. I hadn't been leaking at all. Based on what the U/S tech told her my midwife thought that he needed to come out now and sent me to L & D. At this point I was scared and angry. I was shaking and crying. I was upset because I know the risks of induction and didn't want to be induced, but I also wanted my baby to be safe and I haven't done enough research to know how much danger he was in by having no fluid and a not so great placenta. Also, my cervix was closed and I knew that that put me at a huge risk for a c-section. With the way things looked they didn't even expect him to be able to handle labor with pitocin. They put me on a small dose for 2 hours to see how he handled the contractions. He did fine, so they decided to go ahead with the induction. OMG, I have never been in so much pain in all my life. Ctx with pitocin really are excruciating! Thankfully I progressed very quickly. 3 hours later I was at 5 cm. At that point I wanted the epidural. After about 30 minutes the anesthesiologist still wasn't there and I was going insane so the nurse gave me some nubain. That stuff is crazy. Made me feel so dizzy and weird. So he finally got there and gave me my epi, and it didn't work. I could still feel everything. Thankfully he was born about an hour later. The labor was really fast and I only pushed for about 5 minutes. Pushing him out is one of the hardest things I've ever done. But it was fast and I didn't tear at all. He was born at 10:05 pm on Dec. 13th, about 7 hours after they turned up the pitocin. The U/S was right, I really didn't have any fluid. I don't know what a placenta is supposed to look like, but the midwife said it looked really bad and she didn't know how he was even getting anything from it. And after he came out, the umbilical cord started to literally fall apart!
: He was a very post mature baby. He had skin falling off him, he was really wrinkly, had very long nails and a lot of hair. He's been a little congested since he was born, but otherwise he's healthy and perfect. So now I'm left wondering what went wrong. I really do think he needed to come out when he did. So why didn't my body go into labor? My cervix was still completely closed. Why did I have no fluid and why were the placenta and the cord in such bad shape at only 41 weeks? I'm absolutely positive about my dates. My MW said that God had his hand on my baby. Surprisingly, although this was far from an ideal birth it was actually quite healing for me and was much better than my dd's birth because I felt so supported. I was in a different hospital this time and the staff was SO nice to me. They all knew that I was originally going to homebirth and knew that an induction was the last thing I wanted and they were all incredibly supportive. In the end I'm glad that I gave birth where I did. I'm so happy to have my baby boy.

Wow, mama_b, that is an amazing birth story! It sounds like the induction went really well -- you're very strong for laboring through all those pitocin ctx!
