The thing is in my mind that a forced kiss is small beans in comparison with controlling. I'd rather my girls endure a forced kiss from a well meaning friend who got a little carried away then be wrapped around someon'es finger. The latter scares me whereas the former is a nuisance.

FTR I have been forced kiss and I have also watched friends be controlled in the way Bella is. Bring the forced kisses on!

My friend just turned me on to these books and I love them!!!!

Spoiler........................................... .................................................. ...........................

I think that Bella comes in to her own in the last book and stops letting Edward cntrol her. She goes behind his back to get the paperwork for Nessie and Jacob. She decides how to deal with her dad. And the biggest thing is that she does not abort the baby even though Edward and most of his family wants her to.

I have to confess that I have not read this whole thread. I am not interested in the books, but my daughter, who turns 11 next week, has asked me if she can read them. I'm inclined to say no, since Common Sense Media has Twilight as a "pause" for 13 and up. Just for comparison, I've let her read the first two books in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. I've read both myself, and the second one definitely has some hot and heavy kissing and sexual tension. Is the sexual content of Twilight at somewhat the same level?

I'm squeamish about the whole idea of vampires. Dark Shadows was very popular when I was a kid, and I never could understand its appeal and the appeal of other vampire stories. I think the fact that the premise of the book skeeves me out may be coloring my opinion.

I woudl let an 11 year old read them. My 12 year old cousin did.

They only have sex once in the last book, and it was alluded to. Nothing graphic.

If it is the sex that you are worried about then I would say the Traveling Pants books have more than Twilight. There is also some violence in Twilight and I'm not sure how you feel about that.

I would let me 11 year old read them if I felt she was mature enough. HOWEVER, I would have very serious conversations with her beforehand and throughout seeing her read it to talk about various behaviors in the book. In my mind, it isn't the sexual tension that's the issue, that's fairly minimal. It's the burying of Bella's feelings and constant questioning herself and controlling behaviors that I would talk to her about. I would not ever want her to think that this is the perfect example of a healthy romantic relationship.

This aspect of the story is troubling to me.

I appreciate your posts!

Breaking Dawn is A-W-F-U-L. I think she had a 13 year old fan write it for her.

I have to say I am not enjoying Breaking Dawn as much as the others. I read the first three in a few days and now I am just trudging along in BD.

I *will* finish it, but it is easily my least fave of the series.

I just thought this would amuse Twilight fans. A couple of months ago, I was in the hospital dealing with some internal bleeding and had to have a couple of transfusions. I had asked my husband to bring me something to read and he brought the heap of Stephanie Meyer that a friend had given me. So, there I was, reading tacky vampire books and soaking up someone else's blood. The hospital staff teased me endlessly.

Okay, we went on saw the movie on a date night because we had free passes and a babysitter... which led to buying the book, which led to buying all four books and reading them in two days flat....

I really truly loved the first book (I reread it while waiting for the other 3 books to arrive via Amazon ) All that nice sexual tension, and the hints (and there are a lot) that Bella will one day be a vampire. I liked it.

And second of all :

Things started to go down hill for me in New Moon when Edward disappears for 12 chapters. 12. That's a LOT of no-Edward time! (I am also in love with a fictional character... my DH is jealous!)

I like Jacob, but I like the tension between Bella and Edward a LOT more than I like reading about her nightmares..... Jacob

I really feel like she was pushing it with the werewolf thing. I really really felt like the whole thing got out of her control. Like she thought she could make that part of the story a lot shorter than it turned out.

Anyway, Eclipse was better (Edward was back at least) but the whole Jacob thing just got sillier and sillier.

And then I started Breaking Dawn. Which I couldn't even believe. The whole tension was based on Bella being so breakable and tempting. A whole book about them as vampires with her as the hero? Not was I was in the series for. And the baby thing was WAY too fanfic (I've read a LOT of fanfic in my day, about a lot of things...) and that fact that everyone lives happily ever after? Insane.

So yeah, I can totally see how long time fans could be done after reading Breaking Dawn. I'm going to reread the first three and see if I can salvage my love for these books. (I'm so : that I'm disappointed... I haven't been obsessed with anything like this in YEARS. It was fun)

It's good to know that the author is LDS though... explains some stuff.
