Help. My dd is six months old and is having a bout of constipation. I started her on a bit of solids starting about a week ago but she really wasn't ready so I tried a couple of different things just to see and then stopped. Starting last Thursday she cried while she was pooping. She pooped Thursday and Saturday. Yesterday was the first day she showed signs of really being in pain--arching her back, turning bright red and crying.

I called her ped and the nurse said that their suggestion is four ounces of water mixed with sweetners. I don't want to give her a bottle of sugar water--it just doesn't seem right. The only liquid she has ever had (in a bottle or otherwise) is bm. Instead I gave her a little bit of prune juice last night and this morning with a syringe. Plus rubbing her tummy and massaging her rectum with a warm wash cloth.

This morning she pooped a little bit and it seemed to make her really happy for most of the day. Until about 3 when she started screaming and crying again. It is so sad. She is very tired and wants to sleep but the pain keeps waking her.

Any suggestions about how I can help her along? Thanks!

We're having the same problem. The karo syrup is what the nurse at my ped's office said too - she said it acted as a stool softener (was it Elcy at PMA that gave you the advice?). We tried it. It did nothing. I called back today and talked to a doctor. She said that b/f babies, especially at this time, tend to go much longer between poops, and she wouldn't worry until it was 2 weeks unless the baby's stomach got really hard. The doctor just said to nurse on cue and it would eventually come out. DS isn't cranky from the constipation, but won't touch solids now, which is hard b/c he's running through my freezer stash really fast!

That said, if your dd is in pain, might juice (pear or prune) or maybe a jar of prunes help her to have a bowel movement?

Definitely PRUNE JUICE.

Also anything with roughage--fresh green beans, fresh corn, etc. And more water. (It doesn't need to be sweetened.)

also, you should drink prune juice, it will get to the breastmilk, and eat oatmeal. you can give her a glycerine suppository, too. pinch the top off of a regular adult one.

caution against corn

My dds had a terrible reaction to corn and I read it is not recommended for kids under 18 months. They had painful diahreah (sp??) for about a week after eating handfuls of it at around 12 months.

Prune juice is a natural laxative. You can add it to a bottle of BM to make sure she drinks it.

Sorry your little one is in pain. That's hard on baby and momma.

Prune juice or prunes (Earths Best has an organinc one, and you can also make your own). This works wonders for Abby!

She pooped last night! I gave her about a teaspoon of prune juice with a syringe a couple of times and it worked. We will see how she feels today. After she finally pooped she was so tired she slept for 7 straight hours! Thanks to all for the advice.

Wait awhile for the solids please! Obviously her poor little body is just not ready for them. My DD is 9.5 months and still doesn't take any solids. There is really no rush! I'm glad she's feeling better!
