What do your kids eat?

DS1, well actually both my boys (4yo & 15 mo), are very picky. I don't even want to cook anymore. There are VERY FEW meals I can make that we will all enjoy & most of them are not the healthiest. I am tired of fighting my way through meal times. DH has become rather picky lately too. What are some meals that your whole family will eat? I really need some help before I completely lose it & vow to never cook again!

My son is older (12) and he eats almost everything now but that wasn't always the case.

Some things I found that were helpful was to get him involved in cooking. He always liked pushing the buttons on the food processor. Whatever, if it made him want to try the food he could push buttons! We planted a garden and he picked his own veggies out. He always liked finger foods. I could also always count on pizza, spaghetti, burritos and tacos to get us through. You can easily customize those meals for different tastebuds and you can sneak healthier ingredients in. You and your dh might get bored with blander things but it seems to me that little ones like the sameness. My son always preferred raw fruits and veggies over cooked too.

Oh, I totally hear you on this! My DD (almost 4) is very particular about what she eats and her limited choices change daily, so I never know what she will accept or reject at any given time. My diet is limited due to allergies and DH is not interested in my allergy-free/healthy meals. I am very stressed out about meal-planning and almost feel like giving up. Sorry I'm no help, but I do sympathize. Will be watching this post for advice!

My kids are almost the same age as yours (4 yo and 17 mo), and I completely feel your pain. DD1 is my most picky, but DD2 is starting to pick up her bad habit of rejecting nearly everythign that is put in front of her.

DD1 will mostly only eat pasta, so I whiz up veggies in the food processor and mix them in with the tomato sauce. She also likes quesadillas so I can get her to eat beans and veggies if they are covered in cheese. Noodle soup is another favorite.....plus it's easy and it gets some veggies in them. Baked ziti from Fresh from the Vegetarian Slowcooker is also another favorite, although we've recently discovered a soy allergy in DD2 so we can't eat this as a family anymore .

Both of my girls also LOVE hummus, and they love guacamole so I give them little things to dip in there, even unsalted tortilla chips on occassion.

I sadly admit that there are lots of nights that I resort to feeding DD1 Weetabix cereal and a piece of fruit or yogurt as her dinner. I just can't fight the food battle, and I can't make spaghetti every night ya know. We do require one taste of everything (especially if it's a new food), but beyond that I just don't fight her. She eats well for breakfast (loves omlets, surprisingly with spinach in them), and she snacks well (hummus, etc.), so I don't feel like fighting over dinner is a necessity....I cook what I want to eat and if DDs decide to eat it too that's an added bonus!!

My five year old eats mac & cheese and mac and cheese and cheese and mac. That's about it. The one thing that my whole family will eat and agree on is strogenoff.

I brown an onion, stir in a package of veggie crumbles, a jar of sliced mushrooms and a cup and a half of veggie broth. Let that simmer for 20 minutes. In the mean time I cook a bag of noodles. At the end of the 20 minutes, stir in 1/2 cup of sour cream. Let that simmer for 5 minutes. Then mix it all together.

Everyone eats that well. I pick out the mushrooms but my son is more than happy to eat them for me.

Thank you! I almost cried when I read this. I know I am not the only one to do this, but I guess I just needed to hear/read it. We have done the 1 bite thing on & off because DS1 is soooo stubborn, even that can be a huge fight. He did discover that he loves broc (the only cooked veg he will eat w/o a fight) this way.

my dd1 is a bit older now, she's 8, but she's a VERY picky eater. i've learned to be sneaky. not everyone agrees with my method, but it gets her to eat well. she likes hummus, so i'll add steamed cauliflower &/or great northern beans to add in it to amp up the vitamin content a bit. she LOVES spaghetti & pizza so i'll throw some spinach or whatever leafy greens we have through the food processor to add into the sauce. i usually add a sweet potato to pancakes. i toss nutritional yeast into most things also. and if i make a spaghetti or pancakes or something, i make a HUGE amount of it at a time, so all i have to do is reheat a small portion for her. i just made chickpea cutlets tonight & she ate one like a burger & loved it!!! i hope this can help you. i definately understand the frustration.

i also agree with the pp that wrote that letting them help in the kitchen gets them interested. it's helped us quite a bit in getting her to try new things.

I have been really excited recenty, however, b/c my older one is just in the past few months asking to try more things. YEAH! This is huge for us b/c he would often stick his nose up at certain foods before he even tasted them. We have a veg household, although I am not a vegetarian (I eat some fish on occasion-maybe 1-2x/month). My DH is the veg in the house. But the kids eat like me. They will try fish if we're out, but do not eat meat or meat products. All that said, they are pretty boring eaters even though I love to cook and we eat lots of different things. My kids eat pasta, veggie dogs, macaroni and cheese, yogurts and different kinds of dairy, some veggie soups, etc. The little one will eat some foods with beans in them, but the older one thinks beans are the devil! I am just crossing my gfingers that they both expand their horizons as they grow.

Wow, I was JUST coming here to post about this. My ds who is 4 has become EXTREMELY picky. AAAHHHHHH! I am starting to feel like he isnt getting the nutrition he needs. And it is concerning me, not to mention frustrating.

The one thing he will eat without hesitation is "Lo Mein." I cook ww spaghetti, toss it w/ soy sauce. I also brown tofu, snap peas, onion, and carrot and toss it with the spaghetti when it is done. HE LOVES that. That's about it, though.

The other good thing he will eat is a smoothie ~ I buy green veggie powder stuff and add that in our smoothies, also flax seed sometimes, mix that w/ frozen fruit, soy milk and yogurt.

So, I am looking for meal suggestions, as well : I think what I am really looking for are ways to sneak in more veggies/ beans. He wont eat beans unless he doesnt know it.

That's funny, broccoli is the only veg my DD will eat without a fight as well. She asks for it often, so I always keep a stash of frozen broccoli to steam for her when she asks. If it makes you feel better to know that other people have less than stellar eaters as well, you should check out my blog from time to time......I frequently comment on dishes that DD eats or doesn't eat.

davi - my dd likes chickpea cutlest for whatever reason too.....she COMPLETELY surprised me by wolfing one down, quite a feat for her.

mountainsun - looks like 4 seems to be the age of non-eating doesn't it. My take on this whole thing is this.....if they don't want to eat, that's their perogative. They are getting the nutrition they need as long as you are providing healthy options for them when they do choose to eat. It's easy to fall into the trap of feeding them less than healthy things just to get food in them, which in turn makes it more difficult to get the good stuff in 'em. Our ped once told us not to worry about DDs eating, that it's a very common thing amongst this age group, because their metabolism at this point is such that they don't require a lot of fuel (they are eating what they need), and that one day we would be in his office complaining that she eats too much (I laugh at that, it seems that day will never come....but I have to keep reminding myself that she is a person with her own will and if she decides not to eat, I can't force that upon her)

In my babysitting experience with kids that age, I look less towards making "meals" with recipes and dishes, and more towards finding a variety of healthy foods that go together that the kids like. Sometimes it involves cooking and sometimes it involves creating real dishes, but often it's more about small amounts with greater variety.

Yesterday I was with a 2 1/2 yo and for breakfast she had half a cereal bar and a small bowl of granola with milk. For lunch she had some bell pepper and celery sticks with hummus to dip, some nuts, some cheese crackers, and some apple slices. For snack, a whole banana and some dried mango slices. For dinner, some pasta with sauteed tofu, half a slice of toast with jam, some orange slices, and some egg salad.

Thank you all! I feel so much better. I guess as with everything else I just shouldn't expect so much from my little guy. I am really struggeling with that in many aspects right now.

I'd love to see a chickpea patty recipe too. I was thinking about trying some after seeing it mentioned here alot lately. :

I looke at these books at the bookstore today. They aren't veg*n but I think I may have to adopt some sneaky stratagies, if nothing else to make myself feel better. I keep telling myself I am going to start smoothies again, but I never manage to do it. DS will drink one of those no matter what I put in it

Oh yeah, tomorrow is DS's 4th birthday: & I am thinking about giveing him a you're getting bigger & it's time to start trying more foods, type talk & really inforceing the 1 bite of everything rule. I figure 1 bite isn't too much to ask, is it. If he truely doesn't like it, he can have something else. Is it bad that I plan to use his birthday & come at it in a "be a big boy" sort of way? I really don't like that kind of thing usually, but I am getting desperate.

The vegan "Alfredo" from Vegan Planet and Lentil Tacos are favorites around here. Everyone likes them and there are no complaints about the lack of animal from DH.

The kids also really like hard boiled egg sandwiches (if you eat egg) and pancakes, which we have for dinner often.

I use the Chickpea Sensation Patties recipe from ED&BV. My girls also like the Snobby Joe's from V-con, so if you have either of those books those are a few things to try.

My 6yo dd is also extremely picky. I've given up making dinner based on what she likes. Also complicating things is that dh "has" to have meat and I'm trying to raise the kids vegetarian leaning towards vegan. The biggest problem is that dd actually lost weight this past year. So we need to try to get her to eat a little more but dh and I are butting heads on this. He wants to try to fill her up with junk (hot dogs, sweets, etc). I want to keep her eating healthy and try to sneak in avocado and coconut oil, etc for healthy fats. Since I cook, I'm kind of winning, but since she likes hot dogs we haven't forbidden them either (yuck).

As to what she eats, not much. Brocolli, peas and carrots, corn (mostly still frozen from the bag). Pasta (won't eat red sauce anymore, so butter and parmesan or mac n cheese). Pizza (on good days it's homemade with whole wheat crust, the rest of the time frozen) she does like brocolli on it. Veggie chick'n nuggets/patties. French fries (but not potatoes), she'll sometimes eat home made ones. Muffins, cereal, crackers. Hot dogs and chips. Oh and fruit, apples, bananas, grapes, that's it. I can't even do the one bite thing. She will refuse to eat. She's gone on major food strikes (like hasn't eaten in almost 24 hours), so I really can't force her to eat.

what is it with 4 yo kids? I'm really hoping my 4yo grows out of his picky eating soon. He used to eat anything I gave him, but chemo really ruined food for him. his diet consists of yogurt, bread with butter, certain fruit and crackers. that's it.. and that's all he has eaten for a year now. He can't even handle the smell of food cooking A friend and I were once talking about our kids being picky eaters and she said "Thank goodness for mac and cheese, and PB sandwiches" She was shocked that he won't even touch those.
