Cyrus Boone was born this morning, December 29, at 12:04 a.m. in the most wonderful, gentle home waterbirth I could have hoped for. He's just incredible. He has olive skin and a thick head of wavy dark hair and right now, green eyes just the color of his daddy's.
The birth was so great. I was in early labor for about 12 hours, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., right about the time the midwife got there. I got into the tub at about 9, and Cyrus came out in four pushes right after midnight. It was so much less painful than I thought it would be.
I would have thought I'd want everyone to be hands-on, but the birth had a total UC vibe. I felt really focused inward and didn't really want anyone rubbing on me or talking to me. I feel like I got into a really good groove, and was actually dozing off between contractions for the last couple hours. Aaron and the midwives were just perfect, letting me know I had support but giving me all the space I needed to labor peacefully.
He was born in the caul, which according to legend is very good luck. The midwives said they had only seen that a handful of times in hundreds of births, and never during a waterbirth.
He weighed 6 lb 12 oz after a truly heroic-sized meconium poop, and was 21 inches long. His apgars were (ahem) 9 and 10. I was totally intact and didn't tear even a little.
Now he and his daddy are curled up asleep looking so peaceful. I think I'll join then.
