Yay! ER nurse...and doc, and others!

Just to balance the other thread, I wanted to post about my experiences last night at the ER. My son Avery had a febrile seizure last night in the Target parking lot, which was about the scariest parenting moment I've ever had. Despite a difference of opinion about the role his vax shot had in his seizure, the ER doc was very supportive of me breastfeeding my 1 y.o. son pretty much the whole four hours he was there. When we got there, my son was screaming and confused, and as soon as they took his temp and checked respiration, I told them I wanted to nurse him. Everyone was supportive, offering me a pillow, etc. The doctor asked me if I wanted the curtain shut, and I told him I didn't really care. He said, "Great! It took my wife three babies to get to that point, but by our fourth she could do just about anything while she was nursing!" He then checked Avery's ears while he was latched, laughing a little at our acrobatics to get to the underside ear while still latched. Later, the lab person (what's the term for them? Phleboto-somethings?) came and did the blood-taking off his finger while Avery popped on and off the breast, and never a single comment other than, "Wow, he's being so good!" Then, we nursed all the way down the hall to the CT scan, and the nurse said to the radiologist, "Well, she's got this one nice and calm by nursing him, so he should be just fine!" Finally, as we were leaving, our nurse said, "Oh, it's so good to see him nursing like that. You knew exactly what he needed, didn't you?"

Sorry you had such a scary experience, and that you had to go to the ER (which is about the most miserable place in the world to be with one's child, IMO).

BUT....

I'm SO glad your caregivers did such an awesome job. Yay for them!!!

P.S. Have you considered writing a "love letter" to the ER to praise the staff who helped you? YK...positive reinforcement and all that.

Sounds like those drs and nurses were on the ball! We've always had good experiences here too. No one batted an eye when I nursed my almost 2 year old in the ER and the doctor who treated him told me that her 18 month old was still nursing.

YAY!! I would def write a letter.

When my 2yr old dd was in the acute peds unit for 4 days they didn't even bat an eye to her nursing. It was so comforting for dd to be able to nurse.

Thanks for sharing a positive experience! Unfortunately we see too few, so its great to know they do happen. I also encourage you to write about this when the hospital sends you your survey about your experience.

Sorry to hear about his seziure. I hope he's doing better now. Sounds like it was the most positive of experiences from a really difficult one.

More docs & nurses we need to clone & sprinkle throughout the Western world.

sorry to hear about his seizure, my son had a seizure of unknown cause at 7 months old and yes, i think its the scariest moment i have had as a mom. i wanted to tell you, you will prob be scared and jumpy for a while (i know i was, whenever he made any funny sound, i jumped up to look at him) but that does fade eventually, Jackson's seizure was on 1/1/07 and i am *almost* over it, a whole year later. good luck

but, how awesome about that ER staff! that made a very scary day much easier i am sure.

I am seriously jumpy...it happened while I was buckling him into his car seat, and I seriously can't buckle him in anymore. Hope that goes away, or we won't be getting out much! The seizure started off as a staring kind and then went into the jerking kind, so today he was staring into space, not responding to me saying his name, and I started to get all nervous. My voice must have risen as I said, "Avery, sweetie, look at me!" because he started to smile, still without looking at me. Then he giggled, and I knew he was totally teasing me! Yikes!

I had the same positive hospital experience earlier this month with my 17 month old son, who was ultimately hospitalized for 2 days with pneumonia. I got a lot of "thank God you're still nursing" comments. It was great that they were so supportive. I even got free meals since I was a nursing mom.
