How long will the initial BF soreness last?

That about says it - how long will my nipples be tender? Right now, we're about 90 minutes from the hospital (and who knows what kind of lactation support they have), so I can't consult anyone in person. I'm trying to make sure everything looks good as far as her latch goes, but there's still some tenderness/soreness/pain when she first latches on. Plus, my nipples are consistently sore/tender. Is this normal? We've been BFing about 3 weeks now.

I don't know if its normal but that's how mine are too and she's almost 2 weeks. I know we have a good latch.
With DS I was sore for months and everyone told me his latch was fine. I think I have really sensitive skin.

Mine always lasts a few weeks. Lasted 6 weeks with my youngest dd.

It could be a couple of weeks, even if the latch and positioning are good. Very fair skinned women tend to have more soreness - so if that's you take heart! As long as they are not blistered or bleeding and the pain isn't too intense or lasting all the time it can be normal and will go away. However, if you notice any trauma to the nipple that 90 minute car ride might be worth it.

I agree with the above. Another thought is to look at your nipples after baby comes off and see if they look malformed. They might be elongated, but a weird, malformed shape would indicate a latch problem.

dd is almost 3 weeks tomorrow, and i find the first minute of so of each feed to be uncomfortable to say the least!

i remember it being like this with ds, too. i love my soothie breast pads - i keep them in the fridge and they feel great when my nips are in need of a little tlc.

My boobs hurt so bad!!!! And I nursed two littles! I am really surprised-I thought that only happened with the first.

OOOOOUUCH!!!!

I dont even want to go nurse her, they hurt so bad. Her latch isn't very good because my boobs are so engorged.

It's still kind of painful for us, but I'm still working with her to get a really good latch after her frenulectomy. She still starts out pretty shallow, but eventually sucks a bunch of nipple in there and gets a good, deep latch.

We're still working on her getting a lot of breast tissue in her mouth. She doesn't seem to understand that more is better (in this case). I wonder if she inherited my small mouth.

My ds is about 3 1/2 weeks old and just in the past two days I've noticed a lessening of the soreness. It hurts like fire for about a minute, then once we have letdown it goes away and doesn't hurt at all while he's nursing. It REALLY helps to coat the nips with Lansinoh first. It barely hurts if I use that first, but I hardly ever have it sitting right by me to grab it, for some reason.

My boobs are sore too. The nipples are so painful even though I put Lansinoh after every feeding. I think she doesn't latch properly - hard to make her open her mouth wide. I hope it will change when she grows a bit. Now it is kind of a struggle...
