Newborn cloth diapers

Hi Mamas,

I'm planning on ordering some newborn kissaluvs fitted and countours as well as some Indian prefolds from Cotton Babies this week. Realistically, how long will she be in the newborn size before she outgrows them and needs a small?

And how many of each should I order and how many covers?

Thanks a bunch!!

You're going to want at least 24 newborn dipes. The newborn dipes last a couple months, depending on your child, really. Mine are over 8lbs at birth, but I'm pretty sure we still got 6 weeks out of the kissaluvs, if not more. You'll want a good 5 covers or so so you have enough to rotate when you are rinsing the dirty ones and drying them.

You can go straight from newborn to medium covers, if you need to- I'm not sure I'd bother with newborn prefolds, though. 5 covers sounds good to me.

I got a good 6 months out of my newborn prefolds with Michael, but your milleage may vary and you may very well go longer if your babe is smaller (he was 10lbs 3oz and 21"). If I had started out with premiums they would have been way too big - they were almost too big to handle when I started using them at 6 months, but I could barely get the infant prefolds on him at that point.

Our Kissaluv size 0 fitteds lasted forever. Ds outgrew their absorbency before he outgrew their size. In a pinch he would probably still fit in one! I would say he was a good 4 months old or so before I switched to bumGenius pockets. Infant prefolds also lasted us forever but ds is a small fry. I can't say exactly how long he wore them because he still fit in them when we switched to bumGenius and once we started using those we didn't go back to prefolds until he was over 1. When we did switch back to prefolds infant sized were just barely too small.

IMO a minimum of 24 newborn diapers is preferable if you don't want to be washing every half day or so. Since you need enough dipes to get you through washing and drying time and newborns can breeze through 12+ dipes per day, if you go through 12-14 in one day and start the wash the next morning you will have another dozen or a little less to fall back on while you wait for the washer and dryer to finish.

We started with 6 covers: 3 newborn size and 3 size smalls. That was an OK amount. We had 18 Kissaluvs and 24 infant prefolds.

I'm not a prefold person, but we use Kissaluvs on newborns. I have a 2 year old still in diapers, so it was actually easier to wash every day and make it a routine.

I have 24 Kissaluvs, and four or five small covers. I skipped newborn covers. Those Kissaluvs hold EVERYTHING in, so we only used covers when we were going out and at night. For the most part, we use Kissaluvs coverless.

DD2 was my first newborn cloth diapering experience, and she died at 7 1/2 weeks, weighing 11 pounds (she was 8 1/2 at birth), and still had PLENTY of room in the Kissaluvs.

I have 8 or 9 KL0 contours I'm trying to sell if you want them! We got a bumper crop of fitteds and don't think DH will use these contours much.

my youngest dd was the only one cd'd from birth ..
she fit her kissaluv size 0's till she was about 9 months!
she is petite , 7 lbs 9 oz at birth..but now at 31 months is 24 lbs

she also outgrew the absorbancy before the size

i had small size fuzzibunz before she was born..but they didnt fit till she was maybe 3 months

i had 2 newborn sized covers & 3 smalls..was plenty for us! but i washed every morning anyways..i dont like letting dirty diapers sit
& i had about 20 kissaluvs.. no prefolds.im not a fan of them!

Because of all I've heard about babies outgrowing the Kissaluvs absorbency before the size, I decided to go with Under the Nile fitted for the newborn stage. They got great reviews on diaperpin.com.
