My 2.5 week old has a cold:(

Thanks to her younger sister who would not keep her hands off her and not stop kissing her with a cold. I seriously do not know what to do with her being so new . I read online because there immune systems are not fully developed they can get more sick. Right now it is just in her head. I am nursing her like crazy hoping the more milk she gets the better she will feel. I have been trying to call the doc office all morning and cannot get through: Anyone ever dealt w/ a newborn being sick and if so did it get really bad? What did you do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am freaking out right now. She is too little to be sick

I have no advice, but hugs to you!

I haven't dealt with it personally, but one of my friends just did. Her, if I recall correctly 2.5 week old got a cold, and it was no big deal. She nursed her baby a lot, and that's what helped.

for you and your LO.

You could run a vaporizer for a stuffy nose. I'm so sorry she's sick.

{hug}

Colds can be scary in really young babies, since they can turn into something worse pretty easily. I'd probably want my ped to see Olivia at this point, just so I knew that it was okay now and what to look for as far as worsening and emergency symptoms go.

I hope she's feeling better very soon!!

I'm not in your ddc, but I saw this on new posts, hope you don't mind! My dd was born one month after my ds started preschool, she got her first cold at 3 weeks and had one once a month for that whole first winter, ugh! She was fine though and hardly ever gets sick now, so she must have built up one heck of an immune system! I know it's scary when little ones are sick, but I think all you can do for her is nurse, nurse, nurse and keep an eye on her temp. I think with an older toddler/pre-schooler, it's inevitable. s And make sure you get as much rest for yourself as you can! You don't need to get sick too!

Hmmm....I agree with running a vaporizer, and one of the mamas here (lisa?) mentioned putting Vick's ointment on the top side of your breast so she can breathe the vapors while she nurses. I think that's an awesome idea!

I have, in the past, put several drops of rosemary essential oil on a flannel wipe and tucked that in the baby's pajamas. My midwife suggests rubbing garlic oil onto the soles of their feet. Mmm, rosemary and garlic....add some mint jelly and I might try to eat the baby!

I would also use the snot sucker if/when necessary. And IMO, the best thing to help with a cold, esp congestion, is to pump a bit of milk to squirt into her nose! It always works wonders for my babies, and no worries about the ingredients!

So sorry you're LO is sick! for both of you!

ds got sick from her big bro at something like 8 days -:
we've been using saline drops if she sounds really stuffed up, but she's been nursing, so i haven't been to worried.

she's still kind of sniffle-y, at 3 wks.

hope your LO gets better soon!

NAK

I am Sorry that your baby is sick!

Silas is just getting over a TERRIBLE virus that he and I caught at a family holiday gathering.
(too bad some pple are selfish and don't keep their sick kids at home

It was really scary to have him be sick when he is so young...he came down w/it at 2.5 weeks old, just like your baby.
He never had much of a fever, and was able to nurse and sleep a lot. My MW said that as long as he was doing those things that he was okay.

We took some warm baths with eucalyptus (sp?) oil and that seemed to help the congestion and helped him sleep. I had him sleep curled up in his boppy with his head on it like a pillow so that his head would stay elevated and he could breathe easier...I also put him in his bucket car seat for a few of his daytime naps (in the house of course) : because he could breathe MUCH easier being upright

I took a lot of Vitamin C as well...We are finally getting better. We got sick last Wednesday

I hope your babe gets better really quick!!

My little one has been sick since 1 week old. the dr. said to use saline nasal drops on her nose and use a qtip to get the mucus out. I kept her upright when she was having trouble breathing due to the stuffy and or runny nose. She got better but she still isnt' over it. She still has some mucus sometime. If it gets bad get her seen ASAP though cuz it is RSV season and you never know. Otherwise she is probably fine. Trust your mama instinct. Better to be an over paranoid mother than for there to be a real problem that gets over looked.

If baby is just stuffed up and snotty, it's possible that she's not really sick, just adjusting to breathing dust and dander and other irritants that are around. I thought my baby was sick too because she was so snotty but I then I picked up Sears' Baby Book and he mentioned that it's not uncommon for a newborn to be congested for awhile. It's just that their sinuses are really sensitive and easily irritated by environmental stuff- pets, dust and the like.
He recommended hanging out in the bathroom with a hot shower running or saline drops.

My midwife said the same thing- long as baby doesn't have a fever and the only symptom is a snotty nose, odds are baby isn't actually sick. Especially if you're breastfeeding- she gets lots of maternal antibodies to protect her from colds and flu.

Well, add Olivia to the newborns-with-a-cold roll call Since last night she's been sneezing out globs of yellow-green snot and been congested as all heck. Fortunately, she doesn't seem feverish, and we have a ped appointment scheduled tomorrow anyways.

Sending get well wishes to all the sick babies!!
