Blucactus, your ped sounds just like our Dr.!

After a really horrible experience trying to get established with a ped that was recommended as being pro-AP, we just sort of gave up and then randomly ran across a family practice guy who's not too far away.

Turns out he's EXACTLY what we were looking for.

All his kids were breastfed 3+ years and he's even a director for the local mothers milk bank. So he's a real advocate for breastfeeding, to say the least. He's also very AP-oriented and supports our cosleeping choices. He and his wife also CD'd their kids, so he actually gets a kick out of seeing Nao's fluff!! (says that there are so many more cloth options than when his were in diapers)
He said pretty much the exact same thing as your ped about vaxing.

DD1 is going in for her 4-year check in a couple of weeks and I think she'll really like him too. The really awesome thing is that b/c he's family practice, even DH and I can see him when it comes time for us to get our physicals as well! Yay!

Please think of us Th night (when we have to withhold feedings from midnight on) and Friday morning (his surgery is at 6am). & of course for his recovery too, it's supposed to be a quick one so I am hoping it is. We have family lined up to watch our 2 year old and my hubby is set to take some time off work if he needs to be around to help me after the surgery... I am not worried about him being ok, but I hate that he has to go through it and be away from us during it and he just won't understand. I am ready to have it be over, though. His hernia has been bothering him since he was a couple weeks old. He is in so much discomfort and pain when it pops out, it is very obvious by his cry. Poor lil guy.
your baby is in my prayers as well....

nice to catch up with you all. time is going so fast. noah laughed yesterday for the first time. i literally burst into tears.... so sweet. his belly just shook! he also rolled over last week 3 times in a row from belly to back but not since. also, when he lays on his tummy he will pull his knees up under himself and push and scoot forward 3 to 4 inches repeatedly....right off of the blanket. he is not doing it to get to any thing like a toy or something. it is very cute though.

regarding family's disapproval of your parenting choices... we are on kid #3 so my family and dh family know better at this point than to make any comments. however, i did get an extremely astonished look from a friend this weekend when she learned tht dd2 was still nursing 1x per day. people just really do not understand natural weaning and i am tired of explaining so i just chose not to.

hope everyone stays well and enjoys their babes

Hi all!

I am supposed to be working, but wanted to take a quick minute to catch up! Ellen is SUCH a sweet baby. I am so enjoying her babyhood. She smiles and coos and laughs, and looks at her sister like she is the best thing that ever happened to her. Sofie leaned over Ellen in her Moses basket yesterday, and Ellen immediatley began "talking" up a storm, looking right at her sister. Too cute!! She even giggled in her sleep the other night. Sofie is a great big sister - she sings and reads to Ellen and generally seems to love having her around. We'll see if that lasts once Ellen is crawling and into everything, but for now it is awesome!

Blucactus, I am thinking about your lo and praying the surgery goes smoothly!

Ange, both my kids fall asleep nursing, and both have been catnappers. Both have also been extraorinarily healthy and happy girls. I would just do what feels rights. Some of these lc's are no better than some other medical professionals, imo.

Suz, we got a copy of the book "Raising Your Spirited Child" and it has helped a TON with bedtime and sleep patterns for Sofie. She is finally sleeping through the night most nights. Whew. I would highly recommend it. She actually approaches parenting from a largely AP perspective, including telling parents NOT to let their kids CIO, because it doesn't work. Yay!

Jessicarae, hold strong to your beliefs and try not to let your family get to you. You are doing the best for your babe. Yes, she will learn to soothe herself eventually, but three months is way too young, IMO. Frankly, dd1 is three years old and that is still too young for some things. As Dr. Sears explains it, a need met now goes away, whereas a need left unmet just causes problems for the child later.

Hope everyone is doing well. Gotta get back to work... or win the lottery, but since I haven't bought a ticket this week, work it is!

Well, we're home! Judah did really well on the trip. Now I have to somehow get back to "normal" life without having my head explode or melting down. I knew my DH wouldn't do a ton while I was gone, but, um, I kinda figured he'd do SOMETHING! I mean, other than try to wrangle the boys and work... But by all appearances (and he warned me before we got home), nothing positive happened. So now I have to dig us out of a hole, as it were, and get things moving again. Ah, where is my motivation? I think I need some!

But it's good to be home - I missed my big boys! And Judah definitely missed his brothers and daddy. He responded to them differently than the other folks we've seen on the trip. No question he remembered his family! He was so good on the trip, too. He just smiled at everyone and really charmed them all. He met my dad and my dad's parents, as well as my mom's brother and my cousins. Plus tons of other folks at the conference I attended. And while it wasn't all easy, it was good!

So, hopefully I can keep up a bit better now... as long as the pace on the thread stays slow! I have to devote more time to my family/homeschooling/house/etc and less to online stuff. But I still want to keep in touch!

Vaughn has a slight cold, and he was running a bit of a fever earlier today

I'm afraid that he'll get nasally congested, as what will that do to him eating?! I read the Dr. Sears Baby Book, about getting some saline up there, but what do you do if that doesn't work?
I hate it when our LO get sick and congested.

We used saline and gentle suction when DS's nose got blocked.

It wasn't nice but it had to be done.

Thanks for the rec. Definitely sounds like a book I should check out. It would be so great not to have wars at bedtime!!

He's been doing a bit better at night. (I'm knocking on the computer desk as I write this.) The bribe of an airplane sticker in the morning is a good motivator. That, and running him around outside like a lunatic for an hour each day. He really needs that to sleep.

Welcome Caly!

Blucactus, you and your babe are in my thoughts. How did the surgery go?

We are grooving along here. DH told me that I may have to go back to work soon...or rather that I will have to since our finances are dwindling rapidly. I would like to work, but I really really really do not want to leave my babes. I am desperately trying to find some way to restart my private practice and make enough money doing that or find some other way to work without having to leave my babes with a stranger. I am teaching a class right now, but it doesn't pay that well and it is only until March. What to do?!

Jess, The family stuff can be so confusing and infuriating. Trust your gut!

DS is growing so fast. She is talking a lot and had discovered her hand, which she loves. She has no interest in rolling over or tummy time, maybe I am holding her too much? She loves to lay on her back and watch the mobile though.

Just popping in to report surgery went GREAT. It was really straightforward, semi quick and he did AWESOME. I was so proud of him. More details later. Thanks everyone for thoughts and prayers!

Hazel laughed for the first time today, it was so cute I got a tear in my eye She still doesn't want to roll over at all though.
How is naptime going for everyone? Since I work at home, I just let her sleep when she gets sleepy so she is taking little 20 minute naps all day. I am kind of ready for her to start with a good 2-3 naps so I could run some errands and leave her with dh or get some work/housework done. If I try to keep her awake she just gets overtired and cranky. So I have started bathing her at around the same time each day to see if it might help "set her clock". I guess maybe I could wake her at the same time each day but my philosophy has always been to let a sleeping baby lie.
I started WW this week so I'm excited about that. I have 2 weddings in April and I want to look at least as good as I did before getting pg.
I miss the ddc even though I know everyone is busier now.

Glad to hear it went well, I remember when dd2 had to get tubes in her ears ( she had 15 ear infections in 11 months!) I don't know how moms who have babies that have recurring issues do it!

Hey there! Yes, James is a 20 minute napper too, which can be rough, since it takes a lot of effort to get him to go to sleep. But I'm finding that if I wear him for a good 30 minutes, and then put him down, he sometimes continues sleeping for quite a bit. Today he napped for over 2 hours! But it's definitely luck of the draw.

Good luck with WW! I have a wedding coming up top. Maybe have to look into one of those "belly belts" from Motherhood Maternity to hide the tummy pooch.

blucactus... glad to hear that your baby's surgery went well.

we are now no longer tandem nursing... dd2 is officially weaned. i am relieved as i had not enjoyed nursing her the past few months and was starting to resent it. i did not want it to end badly. she had been down to once per day for a little over a month. we have been talking about a weaning party for a long time. her sister told her about her own weaning party which she remembers. i had told her that when she was ready we would celebrate this milestone. she is 3.5 so understands the concepts behind weaning. she had started talking about weaning herself last week and then decided this week to be done on wednesday. she hasn't asked since she made this declaration and we had her party today. i bought her a little "gold" necklace with the first letter of her name on the pendant surrounded with "diamonds". she loves it and acts very grown up taking care of it and wearing it. she is such a sweetie and i am so amazed at how grown up she is. it is nice to have only one nursing baby again... tandem nursing was more of a challenge than i expected it to be, but i am glad we stuck it out and finished when she was ready.

peace
