What are your plans for clamping the cord (or not)? - Page 2

I read my husband part of this thread and he is freaking out I knew he would but I couldn't resist the feeding it to people and then telling them! He swears if I ingest some placenta I will not be getting kissed for a very long time! Bless is heart, he is so mainstream but he puts up with me and is in for the homebirth, I guess placenta eating is just too far for him!

My first was a c-section so I am sure his cord was cut immediately. With my second I delivered the placenta, waited a few minutes and then they clamped/cut the cord. I expect this birth will be the similar.

I'm going the homoeopathic route, which requires a cube a bit bigger than a sugar lump, so
I was planning to prepare the whole thing following the Traditional Chinese Medicine Placenta Preparation mentioned in the first link elyse posted. Aidan's parents have no particular attachment to the placenta and said I could do what I wanted with it.

I'm not sure that I will consume it if I do have ICP though, as the elevated bile salts cross the placenta, so in my head it would seem that there would be bile salts in the placenta at birth, and I would just be re-ingesting them, taking longer for my bile salt levels to return to normal. Can you imagine the look on the doctor's face if I asked about it?! They already think we're weird because we said we didn't want the baby to have the routine bath.

I'm having a c-section, so we definitely won't be waiting until it stops pulsating

I have honestly never understood lotus birth - most mammals chew off the cord pretty quickly from what I understand (I know our cat did!). Even with the salt, etc, so that it doesn't smell, doesn't it get in the way from snuggling your baby?

no plans to cut it.

mammals chewing off the cord is probably a safety issue b/c they give birth outside and removing the placenta would ward off predators. no need for me (or most of us, i would guess) to worry about such a thing though.

with ezra, we didn't know as much so we only left it on for an hour. my mw asked if we wanted to cut it and i said, "how long has it been?" since she was recommending it be cut then, we thought it was fine. we worried about our dog sniffing it or wanting to eat it or something. now, that our dog has been part of a homebirth and newborn life, we don't think he will bother the babe or the placenta.

i would just prefer to let it fall off naturally this time.

We're waiting til the cord stops pulsing. Whether or not that means the placenta will or will not be passed though, I have no idea. We will wait and see!!
