Congrats, Reha! :::

Katana... I'm in Eugene, too. Maybe we could get together sometime.

Yay for new pregnancies! Congratulations Reha! :

How is it going setting up your own practice? Do you have any clients yet? I would love to hear how this next phase is going for you.

Yay for funding for the Florida school. That must be a huge relief for those of you planning on going!

I'm getting started on my AAMI assignments. I got a big box of page protectors and have been getting my binders all organized. I'm ridiculously happy about those page protectors! It's very satisfying to have everything neat and tidy! I'm a geek.

I'm meeting with a mw to discuss the possibility of me assisting her. I'm very excited about that.

An acquaintance asked me to be her doula too! :

Just gotta say, I love this tribe!

: I hope that this other midwife is the perfect fit for you! You deserve a healthy situation!

I love the page protectors, too.

It's going good over here. I don't have any new clients yet, but it hasn't even been a full month since I started seriously advertising. And, only in the last few days has my website FINALLY started coming up in the top 5 of results in the search engines. : (I am hugely excited about this, since I have spent hours and hours trying to get it to happen!) I am planning on attending births through the end of May, and then taking a break from births until baby is 4-5 months old, and then go back to only 1 birth/month. I would love to get 2-3 more clients due before May at this point, but I will just have to wait and see what the universe provides for me.

I am doing a free hour-long info class on homebirth next month at our library. I'm hoping to get more information out there, regardless of whether or not I get any clients out of it. I'm a bit nervous about what the reception of such a class will be here in my town, but I figure I'll give it a try. Maybe no one will show up, but thats ok, too.

Toni ... What part of Eugene are you in? I'm on 12th near Chambers. Are you in a school or apprenticing with a local midwife?

Reha.. Congrats!! :: It is always so exciting to know your going to have another baby (at least I've always thought so ) Have a joyous and healthy 9 months! :

Katana... I am off of Maxwell in the River Road area before you get to the NW Expressway. Would you like to come have tea sometime?

I am not apprenticing at this moment. We have one car that works most of the time, but isn't overly reliable at this point. I also am still home with kidlets. There are 8... ranging from 1 to 17. At least I don't need to worry about babysitters anymore!

I am studying with AAMI, and my hubby and I are building a website about homebirth. I do reiki, and I am trying to start up a reiki practice dealing with pregnancy & birth.

Morning ladies. It's been a quiet few days around here.

I have a question for you ladies... DH and I were discussing whether or not I want to get my doula certification on this road to midwifery. The main concern is being able to make *some* money with a flexible schedule so that I can possible arrange an apprenticeship, which I cannot do while I'm working in an office. He seems to think doula-ing would also give me a "birth outlet" until such time as I can get to a point where I can apprentice. I would also probably pursue my LC cert and my CBE (which were both part of the plan all along). Between the three, the hope is that I would be able to bring in enough to supplement his income while freeing up time for schoolwork and apprenticeship. Is this a horrible idea? I've been advised by a doula friend that she doesn't think the two (doula/midwife) are even remotely similar, being two different paths. I know several of you have done it though and am wondering what your thoughts are.

TIA

Hmm...I guess it truly depends on what kind of midwife you want to be.

I, personally, disagree with your friend. I think all midwives should be doulas first and foremost, and then midwives when the need arises. I know they are separate professions, but I don't think they really should be. Traditionally, midwives and doulas were pretty much the same thing. They were women who took care of mothers through their pregnancy, through the birth, and then took care of them postpartum.

That's the type of midwife I want to be, anyway.

I find them to be very different- but also intwined and extrememly complementary.

I think any midwife would benefit from also having doula skills. What you're doing, Christeen, is pretty much what i'm doing. I'm hoping that my doula (and later my pp doula, LC and CBE) work will help to fund my education- as well as being things I love and feel extremely passionate about.

Congrats on starting your program! That is exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doula work is very different from midwifery work, but there are overlaps. That is really how i have been funding my midwifery training is through doula and postpartum doula work. It is also a nice way to really know what is happening at hospital births, know the insides of your local hospitals, and a way to see more births. I think you can learn from every birth you see, even if they are done in a style you would never choose to practice in.

Hmm. I respectfully disagree. While I think it is a natural progression for some, I don't think it makes anyone a better midwife. When I first became interested in midwifery, I chose a Traditional Midwifery program. I went to a conference and felt instantly molded by Gail Hart, Enyeda Spradlin-Ramos, Karen Strange, Jana Borino, Janice Marsh-Prelesnik, Harriette Hartigan and many others. I feel that if you are called to this work, you already have a the drive to educate the mainstream birthing community, you know that birth is a natural process, you respect the women you are with and you are open to hear differences of opinion and techniques.

I do feel that being a doula first helps some acclimate to the homebirthing world and gives them experience. It helps them know how to be hands off and feel their intuition grow. Can't one learn that through an apprenticeship as well?

There are many different paths to becoming a midwife and I don't think one is better than another. We are all working towards the same goal. (I hope!)

I don't want to give too many details, but I am popping in to say that I went to my BFF's birth last night. I was supposed to be taking pictures and wrangling her older children, but her labor went from ctx 10 minutes apart to birth of the baby in 1 hour and the midwife wasn't there and I ended up with my first catch. It was amazing. I'm still processing though.

WOW!! That's awesome! Congratulations! :

Maybe it wasn't planned...but it could have been meant to be.

: I'm wondering if it's so

Let me say I won't brush off the thought that I may have to catch the baby again. I'd much rather have the stuff laid out and not need it than be rushing around againg

I think it's a great idea and in fact, the schools in FL all require you to do these workshops (doula and CBE...I'm not sure about the lacation cert). It's a great way to get some cash while being in the birth community and gaining experience. I say go for it!

I totally agree there are different paths, I personally don't believe I could work as a doula knowing majority of my cleints would be hospital births. I don't believe she meant it as a career choice (ie, be doula, then be midwife) but it was meant as women who are midwives/apprentices/assistants need to take the role of doula (labor supporter, friend, massager, pep talker, etc) first to their laboring cleints and step in with their midwifery skills when the need arises. but to the OP if I'm wrong please correct me.
